Lifeguard Under immediate supervision, performs lifeguard duties at a municipal beach or swimming pool. Teaches beginning and advanced swimming instruction, monitors swimmers, provides emergency assistance when needed, cleans and maintains the pool and pool area—including the filtration system—transports youth and adults, and performs related duties as required. Typical Tasks Assists in patrolling and supervising swimming activities at public pools and beaches Rescues persons in danger of drowning Acts as general lookout at assigned stations Administers first aid in emergencies under the lifeguard’s jurisdiction Patrols unguarded beach areas Checks for violations of beach regulations Administers disciplinary measures to enforce rules and regulations Conducts group and individual swimming lessons Assists in conducting swimming meets and special aquatic programs Removes debris and other hazards from beach and swimming areas Ropes off swimming areas Posts storm warnings to swimmers Attends institutes, special lectures, and staff meetings Reports accidents and makes reports, keeping records when necessary Supervises, maintains, and uses lifesaving equipment Assists in finding, restoring, or reporting lost articles Deals with large numbers of people and associated problems at beaches and pools Performs other tasks as assigned Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Equivalent of two summer seasons of experience in outdoor and indoor municipal pools required. Current certifications required: American Red Cross Lifeguarding (including Deep Water), CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid. Valid Government ID – State of Ohio Driver’s License or State ID. For seasonal lifeguards hired under age 18, Diploma/GED and Driver’s License are not required.
