VOALA provides a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low‑income housing, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Job Summary and Purpose The Counselor AOD I – MC is a registered Alcohol‑and‑Drug‑Counseling (AOD) counselor, working under the supervision of a certified AOD counselor or licensed therapist. Responsibilities include providing alcohol and drug treatment services to clients and families, engaging in treatment‑plan processes with therapist and case manager, and maintaining ongoing clinical documentation to support whole‑person care. The counselor must complete the formal coursework required for certification by an approved BBS organization, accrue supervised hours toward certification, and meet annual registration renewal requirements. Duties and Responsibilities As part of a multidisciplinary case‑management team, perform primary alcohol and drug counseling functions, including screening, assessment, and intake. Provide one‑on‑one mentoring and support to clients. Teach clients independent living and problem‑solving skills, developing, planning, and initiating activities that promote healthy lifestyles and alter former negative behavioral patterns. Act as an advocate for client before external social service and legal organizations. Collaborate with case manager and therapist to ensure critical linkages to support services—medical, mental health, housing, and education—are consistently and effectively delivered. Conduct crisis intervention as part of the case‑management team. Lead or coordinate group, individual, and educational sessions. Coordinate treatment services with members of the multidisciplinary team. Conduct discharge and transition planning; draft discharge summary. Meet regularly with supervisor and the case‑management team to ensure implementation of the prescribed treatment protocol and the success of clients in executing their treatment/case plans. Attend and participate in scheduled supervision meetings. Attend shift‑exchange meetings, case conferences, staff meetings, and other treatment‑team meetings as required. Ensure timely and accurate records are kept, both hard copy and electronic, documenting all treatments and client progress, including medication self‑administration records. Monitor medication self‑administration and collect drug screens as required. Maintain records in compliance with HIPAA, state and federal law, and SCADP policy and procedure. Prepare reports as required by funders. Adhere to professional standards of care and conduct as set forth by licensure/certification and SCADP policy, including ongoing professional education and required organizational training. Transport program participants to scheduled appointments, events, and meetings as required. Assist with program and outreach events as required. Participate in coverage of the telephone hotline, pursuant to training and procedure. Perform other duties as required to support VOALA mission and goals. Essential Duties Services for this position must be provided on‑site. Incumbents must report to work on‑site each day of active employment. Screening and assessment: Perform client screening, intake, orientation, and assessment necessary to complete admission, and screen for continuing residency based on ASAM criteria. Treatment and counseling: Deliver treatment using a trauma‑informed approach and evidence‑based practice protocols. Provide individual, group, and family therapeutic counseling. Act as client advocate to agencies and persons when appropriate. Coordination within team: Respond to client crises and emergencies as needed. Coordinate treatment services with members of the multidisciplinary team. Conduct discharge and transition planning; draft discharge summary. Record‑keeping: Provide complete, timely, and accurate documentation of all treatment in the electronic health record system and client files, ensuring confidentiality as required by HIPAA. Professional development: Participate in routine clinical supervision with supervisor. Attend staff meetings, case conferences, required training to ensure continuum and quality of care. Perform required professional education and program training. Perform other duties as required; subject to change at any time. Qualifications Requirements Must pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment, and education verifications. Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflicts that may involve difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients. Education Alcohol and Drug Counseling Registration by an approved accredited organization (CCAPP, CADTP, or CADEE). Experience Minimum of one year’s experience in the provision of SUD treatment services working with the target population; minimum of 3 years sobriety if recovering. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Social Services related discipline. Demonstrated ability with electronic health record system. Volunteers of America is an Equal Opportunity employer.
