Building Official

Job Title

The purpose of this position is to manage code compliance programs and coordinate related review and inspection services.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The specific duties and responsibilities include managing all building permit activities, coordinating the budget process, directing all inspection activities, interpreting and enforcing building, zoning, and related codes and ordinances, leading and coordinating efforts related to the adoption and implementation of new building codes, regulations, and local ordinances, representing the department in presentations to City Council, Boards and Commissions, leading and participating in public outreach, stakeholder engagement, and educational efforts to promote code compliance and awareness of regulatory changes, monitoring all contracts, coordinating staff activities, and performing other assigned duties.

Qualifications

The qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Construction Management, or other related field, five (5) years of related work experience, Certified Building Official (CBO) preferred, Registered Architect (R.A.) preferred, or equivalent training, education, and/or experience, and a valid Driver's License.

Supplemental Information

The supplemental information includes knowledge of City policies and procedures, working knowledge of the principles and practices of construction, building, inspection, and code activities; and methods and practices in a municipal environment, working knowledge of International Codes, National Electric Code, and/or related state and local statutes and regulations, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, skill in reading and interpreting plans and specifications; ability to apply relevant codes and ordinances, skill in presenting to large groups and communicating effectively both orally and in writing, ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends, ability to obtain Texas Plumbing Inspector License within one (1) year of hire date, and ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City administration, other employees, and the general public.
