Mared Mechanical is a 100% employee-owned, commercial and industrial mechanical contractor headquartered in Menomonee Falls, WI, with capabilities spanning HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, controls/building automation, sheet metal, piping, and union trades. The Controller owns day-to-day finance and accounting operations across both the company's construction and service lines — two businesses with meaningfully different revenue recognition, billing, and margin dynamics — and is the company's primary in-house finance leader.

Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for Work-in-Process (WIP) reporting, financial statement production, covenant compliance mechanics, and day-to-day treasury oversight. Primary ownership of the bank relationship and covenant negotiation remains with leadership for the time being. This role partners closely with outside accounting support and works directly with the President, Head of Operations, and Head of Sales on financial strategy, reporting, and controls. The ideal candidate is ready to take ownership of these functions with minimal ramp-up support.

Essential Functions

•       Own monthly WIP schedules and percentage-of-completion reporting across construction divisions

•       Prepare and/or oversee monthly and quarterly financial statements and management reporting, including existing Power BI dashboards

•       Calculate financial covenant ratios, prepare covenant compliance certificates, and manage day-to-day cash / line-of-credit utilization; primary bank relationship and covenant negotiation remain with leadership for the time being

•       Oversee the finance department's day-to-day functions — accounts payable, accounts receivable/construction billing, service billing, and payroll — performed by existing staff

•       Partner with outside accounting support (Wipfli) on technical accounting matters during the transition period and beyond as needed

•       Support annual budgeting, job costing accuracy, and margin analysis across both construction and service work

•       Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and lending covenants

•       Provide financial input into PM scorecards, utilization/capacity models, and other operational reporting frameworks

•       Responsible, through direct reports, for the company's information systems / IT function

Marginal Functions

•       Support administration and reporting for the company's employee ownership program in coordination with outside trustees/advisors

•       Assist with insurance program administration and renewal, including benefits policies

•       Participate in periodic leadership team meetings and ad hoc committees as needed

•       Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

•       8–12 years of progressive accounting/finance experience; construction or mechanical contracting industry background strongly preferred

•       Direct experience with percentage-of-completion / WIP accounting and job costing

•       Construction-specific accounting experience, including contract revenue recognition (ASC 606), progress billing (AIA G702/G703 format), retainage, change order accounting, and job cost reporting

•       Familiarity with bank covenant management and treasury functions

•       Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA a plus but not required

•       Proficiency with ERP systems (Microsoft Business Central experience a plus) and financial reporting/BI tools

•       Comfortable operating as the company's primary in-house finance leader, with outside accounting support supplementing Mared's internal finance team of three

•       Experience working within EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) a plus but not required
