Drives gasoline or diesel-powered tractor-trailer combination equipped with a dump trailer or other type trailer to transport and deliver products or materials such as scrap (in various forms), sand, gravel, coal or other material in loose or packaged form by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include but not limited to the following:

• Sets truck/trailer per instruction at the appropriate location for loading or unloading material.
• Pulls lever or turns crank to tilt body, open door and dump contents.
• Move hand and foot controls to move truck forward and backward to loosen and dump material adhering to body.
• Responsible for completing thorough tractor-trailer combination at the beginning and the end of each scheduled workday.
• Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water for defects before and after trips and submits report indicating truck condition.
• Schedule necessary work with the Dispatcher, General Manager or maintenance personnel for repairs and/or maintenance required on truck and/or trailer.
• Notify management when inspections are needed and/or if any work is needed prior to inspection. Have truck inspected in a timely manner. If any citation/violation is received due to a driver not notifying management, that driver will be held liable for costs, except when instructed by a member of management to move unit that is not inspected.
• Responsible to inspect each container/load scheduled for pick up. If a container/load has any objectionable material (batteries, trash, hazardous materials, etc.) or is unsafe to move, the driver is to check with management for further instructions before transporting container/load.
• Inspect/Walk loads to evaluate and ensure safe and proper loading of trailer before driving to destination.
• Responsible to check with Dispatcher for daily work assignments and pick-up and/or delivery scheduling.
• Maintain communication with Dispatch/Scale House personnel via GPS system. Contact Dispatch/Scale House personnel in the event of any problems or rerouting needs.
• Comply with all Federal, State and Local Agencies including but not limited to traffic, commercial driver license and Department of Transport Laws and Regulations.
• Maintain driver log according to Department of Transportation regulations and company policies.
• Driver is liable to pay any citations having to do with speeding or moving violations.
• Assist workers in loading and unloading truck, as well as assisting in other areas of the yard as needed.

Follows guidelines for truck driver safety policy and general safety rules.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, as individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).  Six to twelve months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, Bill of Ladings, and directions. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak in English effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Current Class A CDL driver’s license

Current Department of Transportation Physical and Medical Card

The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The Employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to wear a hard hat, safety vest and safety eye protection at all times in a processing area.
