Nature of Work: This is skilled work in the supervision and operation of various electrical, mechanical, and architectural systems (heat exchange/recovery, chilled water cooling, steam heating boilers, and turbine systems). Work is performed with considerable independence and at times involves the supervision and monitoring of subordinate's work performance. Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience. Two years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems, high-pressure steam boilers/hot water exchangers, water chemical feed systems, and in making varied repairs to plumbing and mechanical equipment. Special Qualifications: Must possess a Third Grade Stationary Engineer's Certificate issued by the City of Omaha at the time of application. Must possess a forklift operator's permit by the end of the probationary period. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule including evenings, overnight shifts, holidays, and weekends as needed when the boiler plant is in operation. Pay Range: $62,254.40 with step increases to $88,462.40 Annually Benefits: Forty-hour work week. Examination Information: The examination will consist of a training and experience form designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position. The training and experience form will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to test for the position. The form must be completed and returned to the Human Resources Department by May 26, 2026 (passing score 60%). Final eligibility list will be the training and experience form weighted 100%. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Knowledge of and ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks * Knowledge of the principles and practices governing the operation and maintenance of steam generation or steam heating systems, high pressure steam boilers, and chilled water-cooling systems as well as refrigerated air-compressing systems in order to operate, identify problems, and maintain efficiency * Knowledge of the standard tools and practices used in the repair and maintenance of various heating and building machinery in order to perform minor maintenance and problem resolution * Knowledge of heating and ventilating systems in order to operate, maintain, repair, and adjust equipment * Knowledge of conducting chemical tests and chemical feed systems. * Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software. * Ability to perform mathematical computations to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. * Ability to measure accurately. * Ability to interpret meters and gauge readings and make calibrations to the equipment and controls based on interpretations. * Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, technical manuals, specifications, and blueprints. * Ability to understand oral or written instructions. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public. * Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines. * Ability to climb, reach, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, push, pull, and lift approximately 50% of the work day. * Ability to move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds up to 33% of the time; up to twenty (20) pounds from 33 to 66% of the time; and up to ten (10) pounds from 66 to 100% of the time to move objects Essential Functions: Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions. * Supervises and schedules assigned staff to include assigning work, evaluating performance, disciplining, and training. * Operates, maintains, repairs, and inspects gas and oil fire steam plant boilers, waste heat steam boilers, ventilation systems, heating and air conditioning systems, refrigeration equipment, air dryers, heat recovery devices, wiring and conduits, and other electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment in plant facilities. * Oversees and participates in the operation of all system equipment and inspects equipment for proper efficiency and maintenance. * Consults with supervisors regarding mode of operation and potential impact on systems as a result of changes. * Identifies problems, makes adjustments, and recommends solutions. * Prepares maintenance repair work orders and coordinates repair of equipment with the supervisor. * Works with chemical vendors to maintain proper chemical levels and supply. * Prepares requisitions to order supplies and parts. * Performs plant housekeeping duties as needed. * Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor. * Assists supervisor with new projects and installations. * Maintains log of operations for equipment. * Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
