Director, Clinical Development AI Partnerships

AbbVie seeks a Director to lead clinical development AI partnership initiatives, identifying and progressing external innovation opportunities that enhance trial design, efficiency, and execution. The role requires balancing clinical development expertise with AI fluency to drive strategic sourcing, evaluation, pilot design, and cross-functional governance in a newly established, high-priority area.
Responsibilities
- Monitor AI and pharmaceutical innovation landscape; proactively identify partnership opportunities from startups, technology platforms, and academic groups
- Lead structured evaluation and diligence of external opportunities with cross-functional teams including Clinical Development, Legal, Compliance, and Business Technology
- Design and coordinate pilots, benchmarks, and proof-of-concept studies with defined success criteria and next-step recommendations
- Track deal flow, manage partner interactions, and communicate progress and risks to senior leadership and governance forums
- Contribute to partnership structures, term sheets, statements of work, and risk mitigation strategies in collaboration with acquisitions and legal teams
Requirements
- 10+ years in clinical development, clinical innovation, clinical operations, or related life sciences roles
- Demonstrated experience in AI strategy, business development, search and evaluation, or management consulting
- Strong understanding of clinical development problems and operational challenges
- Credible technical fluency in AI and emerging technology assessment capabilities
- Proven ability to manage complex diligence workstreams and cross-functional stakeholder alignment
- Comfort operating with ambiguity in a new, builder-focused organizational area
