Leak Inspector

Job Title: Entry Level Utility Leak Inspector

Job Description

The Leak Inspector performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters and related facilities to help prevent gas leaks and ensure public safety. This entry-level role combines customer interaction, mechanical aptitude, and detailed documentation while working independently in a fully field-based environment. The position requires professionalism when entering customers’ homes, strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards, and the ability to walk and climb throughout the workday in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform periodic facility inspections and surveys on utility-owned gas meters at residential and commercial locations.
  • Enter customers’ homes in a professional manner and clearly explain the purpose and scope of the inspection.
  • Conduct integrity surveys, including direct assessments and close interval surveys, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and promptly using provided forms, field binders, and handheld tablets.
  • Ensure all readings, records, and reports comply with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by maintaining accurate records and following standards.
  • Perform audit reviews with operations teams and provide support during internal and external audits.
  • Communicate effectively with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Follow all safety protocols and participate in safety initiatives related to gas leak prevention and public protection.
  • Use basic tools and gas detection equipment to complete inspections safely and effectively.
  • Manage a daily route of assigned addresses obtained from a handheld tablet and work self-sufficiently in the field.
  • Report to the job site on time and follow the daily schedule and route plan.
  • Participate fully in all required training, including classroom instruction, homework, practice exams, and certification testing.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and communicate proactively with supervision regarding sick time and schedule changes.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and strong customer service throughout all interactions.
  • Meet performance expectations during the initial probationary period, including training completion, exam performance, and field competency evaluations.

Essential Skills

  • Valid state driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle, with at least 1 year of driving experience.
  • Ability to walk, climb stairs, and use ladders throughout an 8-hour workday in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to remain on your feet for most of the day and walk several miles per day.
  • Professional demeanor and reliability when entering and working inside customers’ homes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain the job and inspection process clearly.
  • Customer service orientation and ability to interact respectfully with the public.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, such as experience or familiarity with cable technology, HVAC, piping, automotive work, or similar fields.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic to intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage documentation and daily routes effectively.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team.
  • Intermediate knowledge of mathematics and algebra sufficient to understand and apply technical procedures and readings.
  • Willingness and ability to comply with all training requirements, including classroom work, homework, practice exams, and certification testing.
  • Consistent professional work history demonstrating reliability and commitment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience in inspection, construction, general labor, or field technician roles.
  • Prior knowledge in mechanical, HVAC, piping, cable technician, automotive, or similar hands-on technical environments.
  • Experience in roles requiring strong customer service and in-home or on-site customer interaction.
  • Comfort using handheld tablets and digital tools for routing, data entry, and documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and initiative to solve problems and manage tasks independently.
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules, routes, and field conditions.
  • Openness to additional training and feedback, including performance evaluation during a probationary period.

Why Work Here?

You will contribute directly to a large-scale public safety initiative that helps prevent gas leaks and potential explosions, providing meaningful work with a clear purpose. The role offers significant growth potential within a multi-year utility program, with opportunities for upward mobility into larger projects and more advanced positions for strong performers. The organization supports long-term career development through structured training, certification, and exposure to major infrastructure programs in a growing metro area. Employees benefit from a stable, ongoing inspection cycle that recurs over time, creating continued demand for skilled inspectors and opportunities to build a lasting career in the utility and field services sector.

Work Environment

This is a 100% field-based position that requires daily travel within the utility’s service territory. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with optional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and the contractor’s discretion. Tailboard meetings typically occur at warehouse locations in Hartford and New Haven before field deployment. A typical day involves reporting to the job site, receiving a list of addresses and a route via a handheld tablet, and working independently in the field for the remainder of the day. The role requires working outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions, frequent walking over several miles, and climbing stairs and ladders. The company provides necessary tools and equipment, including a simple tool set, flashlight, gas detector, field binder, ID badges, tool belt, handheld tablet, and flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. The training program includes an initial orientation and OSHA-related training, followed by classroom instruction with a structured schedule, homework, practice exams, and certification tests with multiple attempts. The first 90 days function as a probationary period, during which performance, homework completion, exam results, and field competency are closely evaluated. Communication with supervision regarding attendance and scheduling is expected, and the environment emphasizes safety, professionalism, and accountability.
