Charge Nurse (RN)

Position Description

Employees in this classification are responsible for nursing care at a unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Implements unit objectives and administrative policies. This position is under clinical supervision of the Unit Director of Nurses.

Major/Essential Functions

• Provides clinical leadership, operational oversight, and direct patient care within the Emergency Room, Trusty Camp, Primary Care Clinic, and Infection Control functions in a correctional healthcare setting.
• Provides clinical leadership, supervision, and direction to RNs, LVNs, and healthcare support staff.
• Coordinates daily nursing operations, staffing, patient assignments, and delivery of safe, timely, and patient-centered care.
• Provides direct patient care, including assessments, treatments, medication administration, care coordination, and clinical interventions within the scope of practice.
• Ensures compliance with clinical standards, policies, procedures, infection prevention and control practices, security requirements, and applicable regulations.
• Monitors the quality and accuracy of patient care and documentation and addresses identified concerns promptly.
• Collaborates with providers, interdisciplinary healthcare teams, and correctional staff to coordinate patient care and address clinical and operational needs.
• Provides staff coaching, education, training, and performance feedback to promote competency, accountability, professionalism, and teamwork.
• Participates in quality improvement, audits, infection control activities, and initiatives that promote patient safety, positive outcomes, and operational efficiency.
• Performs other duties within the scope of practice and assigned responsibilities.

Pay Statement

Required Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
• Two years of nursing experience, with at least 6 months of that experience as a Registered Nurse.
• Possession of a valid, current RN license as approved by the Texas State Board of Examiners.

Visa Information

TTUHSC, at its sole discretion, may initiate new H-1B I-129 visa petitions in accordance with the directive issued by Governor Abbott. Approval from the Texas Workforce Commission is required. On a limited, case-by-case basis, the institution may also sponsor eligible individuals for change-of-status or change-of-employer petitions for qualifying positions.
