Safety Manager

Position Summary The Safety Manager is a primarily field-based role responsible for leading and managing the day-to-day execution of the company’s safety program on active jobsites. This position spends the majority of time in the field conducting inspections, coaching crews and leaders, verifying safe work practices, ensuring OSHA and company compliance, and driving corrective actions and continuous improvement to prevent incidents and reduce risk across all projects. Responsibilities Be present on active jobsites routinely (majority of the workweek) to observe work in progress, identify hazards, and reinforce safe practices with crews and foremen. Administer, enforce, and continuously improve company safety policies, rules, and procedures to protect employees, the public, equipment, and property. Conduct routine and special project/site inspections; document findings, communicate hazards, and verify timely completion of corrective actions. Lead or support pre-task planning/JHA reviews and toolbox talks on site; provide hands‑on coaching and immediate feedback to crews. Own and coordinate safety training (new hire onboarding, toolbox talks, and task‑specific training); ensure training documentation is completed and retained. Partner with project leadership, foremen, and subcontractors to address safety concerns, reinforce safe work practices, and maintain jobsite readiness. Support fall protection and hazard communication programs; verify proper PPE use, controls, barricades/signage, and maintain safety documentation (SDS/MSDS, HAZCOM, site‑specific plans) on site. Stop work and escape concerns when imminent danger conditions exist; assist in developing and communicating safe work plans before work resumes. Investigate incidents, near misses, injuries, and property damage; complete reports, coordinate follow‑up, and submit required documentation in a timely manner. Participate in OSHA inspections/meetings as required; coordinate responses, documentation, and follow‑up actions in partnership with leadership. Attend pre‑construction and pre‑task planning meetings at job sites and in the office to align safety requirements and expectations. Track, trend, and report safety metrics (inspections, observations, incidents, corrective actions) to leadership; recommend and implement continuous improvement initiatives. Participate in the company’s national insurance captive group’s safety processes. Chair companies’ safety committee and support the companies’ safety incentive program. Work in compliance with company policies as outlined in the Metalmaster Roofmaster Employee Handbook, Human Resources Policy, Safety Policy, and OSHA regulations. Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of construction safety experience required, with commercial roofing safety experience strongly preferred, including field safety inspections, fall protection oversight, and crew coaching. Ability and willingness to work primarily in the field on active jobsites (including travel between locations as needed). Working knowledge of construction procedures and safety best practices, including fall protection and jobsite hazard controls. Knowledge and understanding of OSHA regulations; ability to interpret and apply standards in the field. OSHA 500 or OSHA 510 preferred; OSHA 30 (Construction) required; CHST, ASP, and/or CSP certification preferred. Strong communication skills with the ability to coach and influence crews, foremen, and subcontractors in real time on the jobsite. Demonstrated leadership, strong judgment, and the ability to influence safe behavior and accountability across crews, foremen, and subcontractors. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to learn safety reporting/inspection tools. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to Illinois-area jobsites as needed; reliable transportation required. Comfortable working at heights and in active construction environments while following all PPE and site requirements. Physical Requirements / Work Environment Frequent jobsite walking/standing; occasional climbing ladders/stairs and working at heights in accordance with fall protection requirements. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around construction‑related noise, dust, and materials. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
