Science Laboratory Technician_Chinle

JOB PURPOSE: Main responsibilities include managing laboratories and ensuring that the right equipment, tools, chemicals and other materials are adequately stocked and kept in working condition. Provides guidance to teaching faculties and students on how to use laboratory facilities in an appropriate and safe manner. Assists in setting up the experiments and practical demonstrations which will enhance student’s theoretical learning, maintain compliance with health, safety and security regulations. This position description indicates in general the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required or assigned to this position. JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Sets up equipment for use in labs according to specifications. Ensures proper operation of equipment. Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment. Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials. Prepares various test specimens for use in science or related labs. Prepares chemical solutions for use in lab experiments. Assists students in lab experimentation, as appropriate; provides guidance in learning and/or functional operation of experiments and equipment. Cleans and disinfects lab facilities and equipment after lab exercises are complete. Breaks down and stores supplies and equipment. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods. Performs other duties as assigned. SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, from a recognized college or university, with a major in Biology, Chemistry, or other scientific discipline, or related field. One year laboratory experience. Valid state driver’s license. Must be able to pass background check, with no prior convictions of any felonies. The Navajo Nation Preference in Employment Act applies to all hiring, promotions or transfers of individuals into this position. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory operation. Knowledge of experimental procedures, protocols, and preparation techniques within area of specialty. Knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment. Skill in operating business computers, phone systems, and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint). Skill in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment. Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co‑workers at all levels. Ability to set up, calibrate, operate, and maintain standard laboratory and test equipment. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format. Ability to communicate effectively in the Navajo and English languages. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand for prolonged periods, walk and sit. Use hands for dexterity of motion, repetitive movement of both hands. Have normal auditory, visual acuity, and verbal communication skills. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in office setting. Exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. #J-18808-Ljbffr
