Summary Under general supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee), a Nurse in the Operating Room renders professional nursing care according to established procedures for the assigned area. Duties include performing as a scrub or circulating nurse during surgical procedures and providing intensive nursing care to post‑operative patients when assigned to the post‑anesthesia recovery area. Responsibilities Provide professional peri‑operative nursing care, including chart review, medication administration, IV and blood line placement, electrocardiography, venipuncture, catheterization, and defibrillation as prescribed. Initiate or participate in life‑saving procedures, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation when necessary. Plan and implement nursing care plans for assigned patients, using professional judgement to evaluate and adjust treatment plans. Verify patient identity and ensure all pre‑operative medications and orders are completed before surgery. Assist during surgical procedures by preparing and directing the setup of instruments, maintaining sterile technique, anticipating surgical needs, and providing total nursing care. Admit post‑operative patients in the recovery area, monitor vital signs, ventilate and suction patients, insert catheters, administer oxygen, and manage stability as per physician instructions. Maintain thorough patient records and communicate pertinent information regarding patient status, medications, and treatments. Provide guidance, orientation, and training to surgical technicians and new nursing personnel as requested. Engage in continuous professional development through appropriate educational activities. Minimum Qualifications Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Rhode Island or through the Nurse Licensure Compact. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Professional knowledge of clinical nursing, sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and the ability to respond to life‑threatening situations. Interpersonal, visual, and aural skills necessary to monitor patient progress and communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and hospital personnel. Demonstrated knowledge of patient care across the lifespan with consideration of cultural patterns. Experience Requires up to one year of combined previous related and on‑the‑job experience to gain expertise in assessing patient condition changes and functioning as a member of the surgical team. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Works in the Operating Room and post‑anesthesia recovery area with frequent exposure to anesthetic gases, puncture risks from surgical instruments, infectious wounds, and thermal hazards from equipment. Physical requirements include extensive walking and standing, lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.
