Hillsborough County Public Schools, Valrico: Buckhorn Elementary – Valrico, Florida Job Description Assistant 7‑Hour Student Nutrition – The role follows all Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Student Nutrition Services (SNS) guidelines and procedures. The assistant performs manual work in the preparation, serving, and cashiering of federal‑reimbursable meals and a‑la‑carte foods to students and staff, under immediate supervision. Responsibilities Assist students during meal service, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and school rules while circulating through the cafeteria. Prepare, cook, and serve all food items, including hot and cold items, correct portion sizes, and replenish the serving line. Take food temperatures during preparation and serving, record all temperatures, and take corrective action if items are not in safe zones. Set up a serving line, obtain paper products and utensils, and display food attractively. Provide friendly and respectful customer service, acknowledging students by name and thanking each student, keeping the serving area neat and encouraging healthy food choices. Enter meal components correctly, document all emergency meal transactions, handle cash and checks accurately, check alerts for special diets, and follow end‑of‑day procedures for cash control and accountability. Receive, check‑in, and stock food; check‑out food for production; organize storage rooms, refrigerators, and freezers. Maintain program accountability, including compliance with federal, state, and local rules, produce necessary documentation, and ensure compliance with district policies and procedures. Circulate throughout the cafeteria, encouraging good table manners and balanced meals, and encourage students to try unfamiliar foods. Assist SNS staff with student special diet requests, ensuring correct food for dietary or preference requests. Assist with food tastings with SNS manager and staff, offering samples of new foods and soliciting feedback. Prepare and clean allergy‑free tables according to established procedures. Ensure cafeteria tables are cleaned of spills and trash; keep the cafeteria ready for the next group of students after dismissing classes in an orderly manner per the schedule. Ensure the serving line is clean, foods, beverages, and paper goods are stored properly, equipment is cleaned, and property turned off; assist with overall clean‑up of the kitchen, dish area, and storage areas. Perform any other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements Experience: Sufficient kitchen or cooking experience to acquire the required knowledge and ability. Language Skills: Reads and interprets safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; writes routine reports and correspondence; speaks effectively before groups. Mathematical Skills: Adds and subtracts two‑digit numbers and multiplies and divides with tens and hundreds using U.S. units of money, weight, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability: Applies understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; deals with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
