Departmental Overview

The Arts Research Center (ARC) is an Organized Research Unit that serves as a think tank for the arts at UC Berkeley. It is led by an appointed faculty director and has approximately 60 faculty affiliates from 21 departments across campus. ARC increasingly centers practice-led inquiry (thinking that takes place in the making, in rehearsal, in the work itself) alongside its public programming. Its activities include artist residencies, study and practice groups; conversations, salons, workshops and public events; and fellowship support for faculty and students. Many of its projects are developed in collaboration with other campus departments, as well as other universities, arts institutions, community organizations, and individual artists in the Bay Area, across the United States, and internationally. Projects are supported by intramural or extramural funds that are raised by the unit.

Position Summary

The position manages the day-to-day programmatic and operational activities of the Arts Research Center (ARC), working closely with the Faculty Director to advance ARC's intellectual and programmatic vision. The position plays a central role in planning and implementing ARC's public programs, artist and scholar engagements, fellowships, workshops, student initiatives, communications, fundraising and grant activities, and other Center programs.

Responsibilities

Program Management - 45%

• Under the programmatic direction of the Faculty Director, manages, plans, coordinates, and implements the full range of ARC programs and initiatives, including public programs, artist and scholar residencies and engagements, workshops, fellowship programs, seminars and salons, student-led initiatives, working groups, online programs, and new initiatives.
• Develops program plans, timelines, partnerships, and implementation strategies; coordinates participants and campus and external partners; oversees event and program logistics; and represents ARC on and off campus.
• Participates in short- and long-term program planning, assesses program effectiveness, and recommends improvements.
• Works closely with the Faculty Director to translate ARC's intellectual and strategic priorities into successful programs.

Administrative and Operational Management - 25%

• Manages ARC's day-to-day administrative operations, including purchasing, reimbursements, contracting, space and facilities coordination, and other routine administrative activities.
• Monitors program and operating budgets and works with divisional staff on financial planning, forecasting, fiscal close, and other higher-level financial analysis and reporting.
• Coordinates on human resources and other administrative processes as needed.
• Participates in annual planning and resource allocation with the Faculty Director.
• Performs other duties as assigned consistent with the scope and level of the position.

Grant and Gift Management - 10%

• In collaboration with the Faculty Director and campus development partners, identifies and pursues grant and philanthropic funding opportunities.
• Researches funding opportunities; coordinates and drafts proposals, narratives, budgets, and supporting materials; assists with grant stewardship and reporting; and tracks grant deliverables.
• Supports the Faculty Director and development staff in donor cultivation, proposal development, and stewardship activities.

Communications and Public Engagements - 15%

• Coordinates ARC communications and audience-engagement activities, including website content, newsletters, social media, program announcements, and other digital and print communications.
• Develops and edits program descriptions, creates design assets and promotional materials and works with shared communications resources and campus partners as appropriate to increase visibility and engagement with ARC programs.

Supervision - 5%

• As needed, provides work direction to work-study students, graduate student assistants, interns, and temporary staff supporting ARC programs and events.
• Provides orientation and training, assigns project-based work, coordinates schedules, and reviews work products.

Required Qualifications

• Ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
• Advanced interpersonal skills including ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
• Advanced oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices.
• Experience with a variety of administrative operations activities such as events planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills and experience in short- and long-term strategic planning and customer service.
• Familiarity with and/or ability to quickly learn UC and campus policies, procedures, and systems.
• Demonstrated program management skills, including the ability to manage a portfolio of projects and initiatives simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of/involvement in the visual, written, and/or performing arts; career goals related to arts administration. Prior experience in event and/or program coordination. Prior experience with public relations or marketing.
• Experience in arts or humanities program administration.
• Experience with grant writing, fundraising, donor stewardship, or sponsored-project development.
• Experience with communications, public programming, or audience engagement.

Education / Training

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. (Required)

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $102,450.85 (Step 1) - $104,489.78 (Step 2).

• This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
• This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.
