Arnold Lumber Company is a fourth-generation full-service lumberyard headquartered in West Kingston, RI, with additional locations throughout Rhode Island. The Counter Sales position is a full-time day shift role located in West Kingston that reports to the Profit Center Manager. Purpose The Counter Salesperson supports daily store operations, maintains a customer‑friendly environment, and assists with sales transactions and inventory organization. Essential Functions Staff the sales counter and greet and service customers. Enter orders, process sales transactions, and create quotes. Stock shelves, cycle count, and organize inventory. Build relationships with internal customers, departments, suppliers, and external customers. Provide exceptional service by welcoming and assisting customers with purchases in a friendly, courteous manner. Open and close the store, and perform cash drawer procedures. Use the POS system to display product availability and provide installation information, product benefits, and literature. Perform entry-level sales assistance, including telephone sales and walk-in traffic through the POS system. Promote sale of stock products across all areas of the profit center. Direct customers to appropriate team members for quotes and special orders. Stock shelves with inventory received daily following procedures. Perform cycle counts as directed by the manager. Maintain current sales materials, catalogs, and brochures. Direct customer complaints and concerns to management or the Customer Service Representative. Develop knowledge of special order and specialty catalogs, both online and printed. Other Job Duties Ensure the counter is always staffed. Begin developing knowledge of all products and merchandise sold in the store. Maintain inventory and housekeeping in your work area and any area assigned by your manager. Develop knowledge of store and company procedures related to stock, sales, returns, delivery, invoicing, special orders, receiving, and transfers. Qualifications High school diploma or GED (preferred). 1+ year of customer service or sales experience (preferred). Entry-level knowledge of products within the department for promotion and sale. Competencies / Skills Self-motivation and the ability to learn independently. Strong reading, writing, and math skills. Computer proficiency. Good social and verbal communication. Outstanding customer service skills. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively and work in a team with an outgoing friendly demeanor. Ability to learn and apply updates to computer systems as they occur. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to walk or stand for long durations during shifts. Vision abilities including close, distance, peripheral, color, and depth differentiation. Use of hands and fingers for fine manipulation.
