Cytotechnologist

Job Title

To diagnose specimens for cellular abnormalities via microscope. To correlate existing laboratory history or clinical information with microscopic findings.

Additional Job Description Responsibilities

  • Prepares, stains, and examines specimens for study to detect minute abnormalities in the shape, color, or size of a cell.
  • Conducts evaluations to detect abnormal hormone conditions and other pathological diseases processes.
  • Diagnosis negative slides and refers atypical, inconclusive, or positive cases for further evaluation; confers with supervisors and other relevant personnel on an ongoing basis about cases.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation of samples and analysis to avoid patient mix-up.
  • Performs and records preventative maintenance and function verification of microscope and other equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with workplace safety, environmental, and/or infection control practices.

  • Educational requirements to meet American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification
  • Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: ASCP Board of Registry Cytotechnologist certification or eligible for certification.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
