DEPUTY SHERIFF OR CERTIFIED LATERAL DEPUTY FIRST CLASS Posting start & end date: 08/26/2024 - 08/26/2026 Salary Range: $62,763.00 - $69,248.00 Type: INTERNAL & EXTERNAL Location: OFFICE OF THE SHERIFF Group: FULL-TIME Position Description LOCATION: Queen Anne's County, Maryland. We are also accepting applications for Lateral Deputy positions also known as Deputy Sheriff-Certified which are for currently certified law enforcement applicants from another police agency with two or more years of police experience excluding time in a police academy or in field training. Applicants must be qualified to attend a Maryland Police Comparative Compliance Course or qualify for mandated familiarization field training. Applicants are hired with a rank of Deputy First Class. Starting Annual Salary for Deputy First Class $69,248. Job Summary This entry-level sworn position provides criminal and traffic law enforcement services to the public by performing the following essential functions under the direction of the Sheriff of Queen Anne's County after the conclusion of a period of probation and successful completion of a recognized police academy. Essential Functions Provides cordial, responsive, and accurate customer service. Acquires and maintains a current awareness of the requirements of Maryland criminal and traffic laws. Enforces State criminal and motor vehicle laws. Responds to calls for service from public. Through routine patrol, deters, detects, and prevents violations of State criminal and motor vehicle laws. Conducts investigations into criminal and serious traffic incidents to identify perpetrators. Initiates prosecutions by making arrests of or issuing summons to criminal law violators. Appears in courts and provides testimony in support of prosecutions. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to read and interpret documents such as statutes, regulations, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals written in English. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to verbally communicate effectively and persuasively with the public and present information accurately and concisely to other employees and supervisors of the agency. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to convey orders and directions to individuals in a manner which invokes a willingness to comply. Ability to work 24-hour shifts; ability to respond quickly to changing work environment conditions. Ability to function under conditions which expose employee to serious personal injury. Ability to remain alert under circumstances, which normally encourage lethargy. Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Must have or be scheduled to complete a police academy recognized by the State of Maryland within one year of being hired by the Sheriff or his designee. Must successfully complete a police academy within one year of being hired and obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Must possess a Class C or higher Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License or obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of appointment to position by the Sheriff or Under Sheriff. NIMS Training The following National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training is required within the first year of employment. Non-supervisory Employees Course 700. Education and Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one (1) year of experience as a certified law enforcement officer in the State of Maryland, or an amount of education and experience required for certification by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and may be called upon to exert physical force to make an arrest of a resisting subject who may weigh 150 pounds or more. The employee must also be able to shoot a firearm with both hands in conformance with prescribed standards and to use deadly force, if necessary, in appropriate circumstances. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation. Work Environment Work is performed in a variety of conditions and often outside. Employee regularly operates a motor vehicle and works in outside weather conditions. The employee often works with firearms. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electric shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, on occasion, is very loud when exposed to sirens, gun shots, air or gasoline operated equipment, and helicopter engine noise. Comments This position is designated as ESSENTIAL. Employees occupying this position may be required to report to or remain on duty when County offices are closed due to inclement weather or for other reasons. An employee in this position may be required to work shift work, overtime, weekends, and holidays and remain on standby for a call back to work. Employees must conform to applicable policies and safety rules. This position must serve a period of twenty-four (24) months’ probation from the date of academy graduation during which they may be terminated without notice or cause.
