26-27 Pool: High School Social Studies Teacher Starting Date: Aug 10, 2026 Job Description Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as a Social Studies Teacher. This position will start in August 2026. This position strongly prefers applicants with a 5-12 Social Studies (All) endorsement. Schools currently hiring for this position include: East High School.

HIRING SPECIFICATIONS

Valid Iowa teaching license (appropriate endorsement code for teaching assignment). Knowledge of subject, curriculum, effective teaching methods. Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communications. Previous classroom teaching experience. Experience in an urban school district.

BASIC FUNCTION

Responsible for planning and delivering a high-quality educational program to meet children’s academic and social‑emotional needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Deliver daily lessons, aligned to state and district standards that meet students’ individual needs and ensure growth. Create a culturally inclusive classroom that meets the academic and social emotional needs of students. Participate in building and district professional learning communities to plan for instruction, analyze data, and create assessments. Monitor student learning on a daily basis. Use multiple data points to guide and individualize instruction. Communicate with families on a regular basis. Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the eight Iowa Teaching Standards. Participate in professional development. ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position) Attend work on a prompt and regular basis. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees. Assist with other duties as may be assigned. FLSA STATUS: Exempt FT/PT: Full Time (7.75 hour day) (Contract days vary by assignment)
