Steering Agile Release Train Lead (ART Lead)

Job Description The Vehicle Mechatronics and Embedded Controls – Evolving Business organization (VMEC) is central to the technology that enables the vehicle to move, turn and stop. VMEC develops and deploys complex embedded controllers for propulsion and chassis control systems using agile principles. These controllers support advanced features such as active safety, autonomous driving, trailer braking and crab walk. Work Arrangement Hybrid – the successful candidate is expected to report to a specified location in Warren, Michigan or Milford, Michigan three times per week (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) or as directed by business needs. The Role This role focuses on guiding and optimizing the delivery of value across multiple agile teams within the VMEC organization. It involves coaching teams, facilitating release train events, ensuring alignment with product and architectural objectives, and driving continuous improvement. What You’ll Do Lead and facilitate all ART events, including PI Planning, Scrum of Scrums, System Demos, and Inspect & Adapt workshops. Coach and mentor Scrum team members and development teams to foster an agile mindset. Collaborate with Product Management, System Architects, and stakeholders to clarify the ART’s vision, roadmap, and priorities. Identify and remove impediments, escalating issues when necessary. Drive continuous improvement initiatives using data and feedback to optimize processes. Ensure adherence to General Motors’ engineering standards, architectural guidelines and quality assurance practices. Facilitate effective cross‑functional communication and collaboration. Oversee the end‑to‑end software development lifecycle for the ART, including coding, debugging, testing, and deployment. Report on ART performance, progress and key metrics to senior leadership. Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in controls system development, including automotive chassis control integration, vehicle electrical systems, serial data communications and system validation. Proven experience in cross‑functional team leadership within a complex software development environment. Strong understanding and application of agile principles and practices. Demonstrated experience in software development, coding, debugging and testing. Solid knowledge of test methodologies and practices. Familiarity with data architecture concepts and their application. Excellent communication, interpersonal and coaching skills. Strong facilitation skills for large group meetings and workshops. Strong problem‑solving and conflict resolution abilities. Understanding of engineering theory and operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms. Analytical ability to tackle unusual and difficult problems. Strong sense of urgency and ownership. Experience in project management, planning and leading meetings. Effective interpersonal skills to influence others with differing priorities. What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills) Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field. Minimum of 8 years of controls system development experience. Understanding of steering mechanisms and their operation. High level of analytical ability for complex problems. Strong sense of urgency and ownership. Proficiency in project management and meeting facilitation. Influential interpersonal skills to manage differing priorities.
