UCSD PROS Career Coach

DESCRIPTION

The new Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to health and social equity and has over 80 primary salaried faculty, 25 secondary faculty, 200+ personnel, 200 postgraduate students, and 550 undergraduate majors. The School includes activities in the Public Health disciplines of Behavioral Medicine, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Policy, Health Equity, Public Mental Health, and Environmental and Climate Health. The School administers two PhD programs (Public Health and Biostatistics), a Master of Public Health professional degree program, an MS in Biostatistics, the only Health Sciences undergraduate program (BSPH), an MAS in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UCSD Extension, and a Preventive Medicine residency program. The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on Wireless and Population Health Systems, Health Promotion and Equity, Women's Health, and Tobacco Control, and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School houses five recharge cores providing services to UCSD and external customers, and the School's faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.

The UCSD PROS program serves a wide array of clients from throughout San Diego County and we specialize in serving adults whose lives have intersected with the criminal justice system including adults under community supervision (probation, parole, court diverted). The UCSD PROS Career Coach also serves adults impacted by violence, including gun violence and other forms of penetrative injuries and who may be living with trauma or mental illness. Career Coaches will collaborate with other UCSD PROS staff to offer holistic client services.

The position will use the UCSD PROS Career Coaching curriculum to support clients. The position must have high knowledge of challenges and solutions to securing work as experienced by adults under community supervision (probation, parole, court diverted) in San Diego or persons who may have physical or mental health concerns that may impact employment opportunities. The incumbent must be able to work with clients ranging from those with little/no experience to persons enrolled in higher education whose lives have been impacted by the criminal justice system.

The position guides clients job search including job seeking, planning and goal setting, exploration of professional interests, skills and expertise, exploration of current industry prospects as well as local vocational or other training or employment opportunities. The position will help clients develop individualized job search strategies and action plans. The position advises on job search activities through job acceptance. The position is expected to support clients in developing the knowledge, skills and perspective needed to be successful in retaining their employment in order to create economic stability. Expertise in the San Diego labor market, organizations and supports for job seekers is required.

The position helps clients understand how to: use technology to seek and apply for employment opportunities, conduct online video interviews, and download relevant apps for the phone to support employment or educational activities and/or other technological skills relevant to employment seeking. The position is expected to mentor clients as needed to support their use technology for daily activities and be well versed in the use of AI as it impacts job seeking. The position must be able to also support clients on basic financial literacy topics as part of the career development process.

The position tracks clients' progress by keeping meticulous records, and documenting data regarding job search outcomes. The position plans and delivers career development/job search programming and workshops focusing on resume writing, interview skills, job search strategies, and other presentations depending on clients' needs. Strong interpersonal skills and strong organizational skills are needed and incumbent must feel comfortable working in a supportive team system. Spanish language skills are a plus.

Although the majority of the responsibilities of this position are client-facing, the position also interacts with employers, plans and conducts employer visits, and integrates/invites employer participation in workshops, panel discussions, and conversations and may be asked to lead staff development sessions for the UCSD PROS team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Eight (8) years of related experience, education/training, or a Masters degree in counseling or related career coaching credential and/or education as it relates to working with adults impacted by the criminal justice system as well as those living with mental illness or physical disabilities plus two (2) years relevant experience in functional career advising experience or industry experience.

  • Strong experience providing one-on-one individualized career counseling, providing career planning and job hunting guidance and advice. Familiarity with career prospects or job opportunities, for adults with diverse labor market and educational experiences, and may be early career or mid career. Experience providing individual coaching sessions on resume building, job search goal-setting and job search strategies to adults impacted by the criminal justice system. Demonstrated experience on counseling clients on how to be successful at work and keep their job to establish economic stability.

  • Experience developing rapport with clients tracking client progress from initial intake through job acceptance. Experience in a goal oriented career counseling environment; experience monitoring client progress, reaching out to clients to promote job search progress and to express support and encouragement.

  • Experience advising clients in the selection of appropriate career goals via exploration of professional interests, skills, expertise, previous employment background, industry job prospects, and local and global employment opportunities. Experience promoting a variety of job search techniques appropriate to career goals; experience researching employment trends in a variety of industries to benefit clients' job search activities.

  • Experience quickly and effectively assessing clients' career related needs. Experience providing useful resources and advice within a short time frame in person, online, and in a group setting.

  • Experiencing planning, implementing and delivering a wide variety of career development/job search programs. Experience planning and delivering resume workshops, interview skills workshops, job search workshops, and other presentations geared to career development and job/internship searches. Experience presenting in person to small and large groups, in person and digitally/via online mechanisms

  • Excellent written communication skills. Ability to write clearly and concisely. Experience editing resumes, cover letters and advising others on how to write effective resumes, cover letters, business correspondence, etc. Rapport-building experience with clients, staff, and business professionals, corporate representatives. Demonstrated ability to facilitate group discussions, interactions and training, using group dynamics theory and experience. Professional, polished, business demeanor.

  • Basic knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.

  • Creativity, resourcefulness, and use of original ideas. Ability to interpret trends, define problems, conceptualize ideas and convert to practical solutions. Ability to integrate advanced career management knowledge into programs to meet assessed needs of clients.

  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures. Experience effectively interacting and advising diverse, multi cultural, domestic and international populations, staff, employers, etc.

  • Ability to use computer systems and applications, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills. Proficient in a highly computerized environment (databases, electronic bulletin boards, e-mail, social media, Microsoft Office). Willing to investigate, use and leverage technology to assist clients at all stages of the labor market continuum. . Demonstrated expertise in using technology to seek and apply for employment opportunities, conduct online video interviews, and download relevant apps for the phone to support employment or educational activities and/or other technological skills relevant to employment seeking. Demonstrated ability to mentor clients as needed to support their use technology for daily activities and well versed in using AI across the job seeking process.

  • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to hiring practices, particularly as these affect adults who have experienced incarceration or other criminal justice system contact. Demonstrated knowledge of private, nonprofit and public sector hiring practices.

  • Prioritization and time management skills. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience summarizing and synthesizing information and data. Experience performing market research. Experience generating reports, preparing executive summaries. Experience collecting, documenting, and analyzing data and in order to recommend a course of action.

  • Experience interacting with corporate recruiters or employers who are friendly to individuals with lived experience with the criminal justice system, low educational attainment, or limited work experience. Experience in developing or identifying internship opportunities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic knowledge of UC programs, career services, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing and able to travel locally.

  • Workshops, special events, career fairs, are occasionally held in the late afternoons or early evenings or weekends, per community partners' schedules. (These events are scheduled in advance.)

  • Must have flexible schedule to provide support in-person or remotely nights or weekends.
