Psychiatrist (06000C) University Health Services #86630 Departmental Overview University Health Services serves the campus as a comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited medical care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty, and staff. Position Summary Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Psychiatry, the Psychiatrist has day-to-day responsibility for providing comprehensive Psychiatry assessments and managing psychiatric care for patients referred to Psychiatry within the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) setting within University Health Services (UHS). The Psychiatrist works collaboratively with CAPS staff, other UHS staff, and community providers to coordinate timely, appropriate, and quality patient care. The Psychiatrist provides clinical consultation to CAPS staff and medical staff within UHS on an ad hoc basis, performs duties to cover for other Psychiatry colleagues, and is responsible for various administrative duties, including reviewing requests for medical records and documenting all contacts appropriately. Responsibilities Patient Care The Psychiatrist provides direct patient care service including new patient evaluation (emergent, urgent, and routine), follow-up care, and case management as required. This includes the following: Initial intake evaluation for patients referred to psychiatry, including reason for referral, history of present illness, pertinent medical and psychiatric histories, current medications, allergies, trauma and violence histories, substance use history, other pertinent psychosocial history, and an appropriate mental status and physical examination. Initial evaluation includes formulation based on information obtained in the first appointment, mental health differential diagnosis, treatment plan, and disposition. The treatment plan includes ordering and interpreting diagnostic test(s) as appropriate, recommending therapeutic treatment modalities (including medications), obtaining informed consent prior to initiating treatment(s), providing psychoeducation, and providing referrals as appropriate. Prior medical and/or mental health records from outside providers will be requested as appropriate. Collaboration with all members of the medical and mental health care team throughout treatment. Monitoring changes in client’s symptoms, mental status, and/or condition and medication side effects as appropriate. Adjusting the treatment plan as needed. Monitoring the impact of non-prescribed substances used and collaborating on treatment plan when indicated. Monitoring for misuse or diversion of stimulant medication and collaborating on treatment plan when indicated. Requesting consultation with colleagues when appropriate. Collaboration and Consultation The Psychiatrist collaborates in relation to providing direct patient care as above, and acts as a consultant in the area of expertise to various clinical disciplines at UHS and the campus at large, including: Consultation with all members of the patient care team when appropriate. Providing coverage care for clients of colleagues when indicated. Providing expert psychiatry consultation regarding patient assessment and management when requested by any staff member in Clinical Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Social Services, and other UHS staff. Providing consultation or information regarding area of expertise to a campus group for crisis intervention or education. Administrative Maintains professional standards of documentation, including: Initial intake, follow-up appointments, any other patient or third‑party contacts, consultations, termination summaries, and all other pertinent and required patient‑specific information are documented appropriately in the psychiatric record. Chart notes are succinct, accurate, and completed in a timely fashion in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Charting reflects the process of care, patient progress, and current mental status. Informed consent is obtained and documented where applicable. Medication allergies and side effects are documented appropriately and kept up to date. Review of Medical Record Requests The Psychiatrist provides clinical analysis and input as needed to review outside requests for UHS psychiatry records. Organizational Responsibilities The Psychiatrist conducts all activities with the mission and goals of CAPS, UHS, and the campus in mind, including: Adhering to principles of quality, customer‑oriented standards. Demonstrating professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions with patients and staff. Maintaining an understanding of the social, cultural and environmental context of health, including mental health on the college campus. Participating constructively in staff meetings. When assigned, actively participating on UHS committees and/or developing new programs/ideas. Documenting and referring administrative inquiries, patient complaints/concerns to appropriate supervisors. Being knowledgeable of patient rights and responsibilities, rules of confidentiality and patient privacy. Readily accepting additional responsibility including assisting with unit operations when requested. Maintaining patient records appropriately including confidentiality and completeness of notes, in written and electronic formats. Being knowledgeable of UHS and campus departments, services, locations, operational, administrative, business, and personnel policies. Working collaboratively with University Health Services staff. Demonstrating flexibility and adaptability as health care practices and related technology change. Other Duties as Assigned Required Qualifications Education MD or recognized equivalent. Successful completion of a psychiatry residency at an ACGME accredited program. Significant clinical experience in outpatient psychiatry. Licensure and Certifications Medical license required. Significant clinical experience in outpatient psychiatry. Active DEA registration to prescribe Schedule II–V medications. Current board certification or board exam eligibility in psychiatry. Active Basic Life Support certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Effective diagnostic and decision‑making skills in area of specialty/expertise. Experience in the assessment and treatment of patients presenting with symptoms consistent with ADHD. Experience in the assessment of and ability to work with high‑risk populations, including severe and complex mental health concerns. Working knowledge of college developmental and mental health issues including dual diagnoses. Experience working with and commitment to addressing the needs of multicultural and marginalized populations. Effective verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Working knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct. Expertise working in a collaborative manner with diverse patient groups, medical and mental health staff, and campus and community partners. Effective skills in communication, coordination and consultation. Must be computer literate. Working knowledge of electronic health records. At Least 3 Years Post‑Licensure Salary & Benefits The budgeted salary range is $94,336.80 – $175,381.20. This is a 60% part‑time (24 hours per week) career position that is eligible for full UC benefits. The position is exempt and paid monthly. Conviction History Background This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities. Berkeley does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.
