Patient Account Representative

Summary This position is responsible for billing and follow up of insurance accounts. It includes verification of benefits and communication with insurance companies. The role requires a broad knowledge of the hospital charge posting system and collaboration with hospital departments to verify charges, capture lost charges, and review the appropriateness of account balances. Responsibilities Verify inpatient and outpatient accounts for insurance eligibility (approximately 25% of time). Follow up on outstanding accounts receivable (approximately 25% of time). Review claims for correct codes, appropriate charges, and general accuracy (approximately 25% of time). Post payments and adjustments according to payer requirements (approximately 25% of time). Resolve credit balances. Rebill accounts for secondary insurance billing. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned. Assist co-workers as needed and participate in department teams. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Four years experience in a hospital setting with emphasis on insurance billing and computers preferred; additional courses in medical terminology and proficiency in Excel and Word preferred. Typing speed of 50 words per minute required. 10-key experience and efficiency required. Windows PC and internet experience required. Ability to work well under pressure and in a team environment. At least two years in a billing setting with insurance experience and problem solving skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Windows (competency required). Physical and Mental Requirements Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex or appropriate substitute. Must move freely around the facility, sit, stand, walk for long periods, and perform frequent postural changes. Must follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements. Must handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay alert. Overall dexterity required; may require repetitive movements.
