Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Intuitive Surgical seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to develop surgical accessories for da Vinci robotic systems. The role involves designing, testing, and documenting mechanical components across new products and manufacturing improvements, requiring cross-functional collaboration in a regulated medical device environment.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for surgical accessories within multidisciplinary teams
• Conduct rapid iteration through prototyping, testing, simulation, and analysis of product designs
• Create product specifications balancing critical functions, safety, manufacturability, and cost
• Perform FMEA, tolerance analysis, and root cause investigation of design and manufacturing issues
• Collaborate with manufacturing, purchasing, and suppliers to transition designs into production and sustain field performance

Requirements

• 8+ years hardware product design experience with BS Mechanical Engineering (or 6+ years with MS degree)
• Proficiency in SolidWorks, FEA analysis, GD&T, and tolerance stack analysis
• Experience in regulated medical device industry
• Knowledge of injection molding, thermoset molding, machining, and other manufacturing processes
• Demonstrated expertise in materials (plastics, silicones, isoprenes) and failure analysis techniques
• Strong communication and systems-level thinking across multiple design disciplines
• Comfort with machine shop, measurement, and test equipment operation
