Assistant Mechanic

The job of Assistant Mechanic is done for the purpose of providing mechanic services with specific responsibility for performing assigned repairs and preventive maintenance; assisting mechanics and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site. This job reports to Shop Supervisor/Director of Transportation.

Essential Functions:

  • Adjusts parts, components, systems for the purpose of ensuring the fitness and proper operation of all vehicles.
  • Assists mechanics with diagnoses and repairs of mechanical defects on all vehicles for the purpose of completing difficult tasks and responding to coworker requests.
  • Maintains tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance program for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Performs functions of a school bus driver for the purpose of meeting the district's transportation service needs.
  • Prepares written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Repairs assigned vehicle system components for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Other Functions:

  • Attends department in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Working Environment:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience:

Job related experience is required. Education High school diploma or equivalent.

Equivalency Required Testing:

Certificates: Valid Driver's License & Evidence of Insurability

Continuing Educ./Training:

Clearances: Qualify for a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Own toolbox and hand tools

FLSA Status: Non Exempt F (18.00)
