Central Sterile Technician

The Central Sterile Technician is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of surgical instrumentation sterilization and supply management in perioperative services. This role involves preparing, sterilizing, and maintaining surgical instruments and supplies, performing quality control tests, managing inventory, and supporting departmental education and performance improvement activities. The technician applies aseptic techniques and collaborates closely with the Central Service Supervisor and other departments to facilitate patient flow and ensure compliance with sterilization standards. Responsibilities:

• Create assignments and communicate operational needs with OR charge nurse/practice leader.
• Ensure proper operation and daily testing of autoclave units and sterilizers.
• Order, maintain, and restock supply inventory and patient care unit supply carts.
• Perform biological and chemical tests and record results accurately.
• Inspect sterilization equipment for malfunctions and report issues.
• Wrap, package, and process surgical instruments and supplies using appropriate sterilization methods.
• Assist with clerical duties, supply charge processing, and departmental documentation.
• Support orientation and continued education for new personnel.
• Apply aseptic techniques and maintain cleanliness of department areas and equipment.
• Clean scopes manually and using high-level disinfection processes.
• Participate in departmental performance improvement activities.
• Assist other departments as needed and perform additional duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Registered Central Service Technician (RCST) certification.
• Minimum of 6 months experience in central sterile processing.
• Knowledge of sterilization standards as set forth by IAHCSMM.
• Strong work ethic and ability to communicate effectively.

• Experience with medivator cleaning systems and high-level disinfection.
• Familiarity with tray preparation and handling special procedure items.
• Interpersonal skills including teamwork, customer service orientation, and initiative.

• Physical demands include frequent reaching, handling, and stooping; ability to exert 10 to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
• Must maintain certification and participate in ongoing education and in-services.
• May be required to assist other departments and perform duties beyond the described tasks.

• Work schedule and shifts are determined by department needs; may include variable hours to support perioperative services.
