Supervisor Phlebotomy - Core Lab

Description The Phlebotomy Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision of phlebotomy operations within their specified location, including the operation and duties of phlebotomists. The incumbent must be capable of performing, teaching, and monitoring all functions within the laboratory, such as scheduling, specimen collection, labeling, receipt, processing, delivery, and archiving. This individual must work and communicate with various health professionals in the organization as needed to complete tasks on a daily basis. Responsibilities Supervises all phlebotomy activities, including training, evaluation, and documentation of staff performance. Handles hiring and training of new phlebotomists. Ensures specimen integrity by enforcing laboratory procedures for collection, handling, and processing. Maintains, implements, and enforces departmental operating policies and procedures, including quality control, quality assurance, and safety. Provides orientation and training for staff to ensure comprehension of company policies and procedures. Performs blood collection (venipuncture, fingerstick). Uses aseptic technique to maintain specimen integrity, following department procedures. Processes samples for appropriate storage and transport to the laboratory. Enters patient demographic and insurance information into the laboratory information system. Enters laboratory orders into the laboratory information system. Conducts impatient/CTYU phlebotomy rounds as scheduled. Follows patient identification process. Answers questions and resolves problems related to test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes, and patient results using the lab information system or other data retrieval systems. Supervises the recording of all statistical information. Ensures all specimen collections and processing are performed in compliance with UMHC guidelines. Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection, and maintains daily tallies of collections performed. Continuously monitors and improves internal processes within the phlebotomy department. Performs other duties as assigned. Education Requirements High School degree or equivalent. Licensure/Certification Requirements Successful completion of phlebotomist training with certification as a Phlebotomist required. Professional Experience Requirements Five (5) years of relevant experience performing phlebotomy functions in a medical setting; prior management experience preferred. Ability to use a computer and type.
