The Nursing Home Administrator is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the facility, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. The goal is to provide the highest degree of quality care to residents at all times. Given the 24/7 nature of nursing homes, this role may require non-standard hours, including on-call responsibilities during nights, weekends, and holidays. The Nursing Home Administrator will primarily focus on management and administrative tasks, interacting with residents, families, staff, and other stakeholders. Clinical duties are minimal.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:As the Administrator, you will have the authority, responsibility, and accountability to carry out the following duties. Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be assigned to meet the needs of the facility and residents.
Facility Management:
Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate the facility's programs and activities to ensure smooth operations.
Establish and maintain written policies and procedures governing facility operations.
Regularly review and update policies to ensure compliance with current regulations.
Staff Management:
Develop and maintain job descriptions for all staff positions and ensure regular performance evaluations.
Assist department directors with the creation and implementation of departmental policies and procedures, fostering collaboration and teamwork across departments.
Ensure proper staff training through in-service programs, on-the-job training, and orientation.
Communication & Liaison:
Act as a liaison to employees, residents, family members, visitors, and regulatory agencies, ensuring effective communication of policies and procedures.
Serve on facility committees (e.g., Infection Control), providing written and oral reports to the governing board as needed.
Represent the facility in meetings with external agencies, government representatives, and third-party payers.
Financial Oversight:
Assist the President/CEO in preparing the annual operating budget for board approval.
Ensure timely submission of financial records and cost reports to appropriate governmental agencies.
Monitor economic conditions and inform the President/CEO of necessary adjustments to maintain quality care standards.
Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines, including maintaining accurate records and documentation.
Respond to survey inspections and regulatory audits, providing plans of correction as needed.
Maintain confidentiality of all resident information and ensure residents' rights are upheld.
Resident Care & Environment:
Maintain a warm, inviting atmosphere while ensuring a clean and safe environment for residents.
Oversee the maintenance of supplies, equipment, and resources to meet the needs of residents.
Ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained at all times to provide the best care.
Problem-Solving & Decision-Making:
Identify and address operational problems, working closely with department heads to resolve issues and improve service quality.
Provide guidance to department directors and staff to ensure the facility runs efficiently.
Address resident and family grievances, documenting and taking appropriate actions when necessary.
Public Relations & Community Involvement:
Maintain good public relations and a positive reputation for the facility within the community.
Foster strong relationships with the medical community and other healthcare organizations.
Health & Safety Compliance:
Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including fire protection, infection control, and other health and safety guidelines.
Conduct routine inspections of the facility to ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
Personnel Management:
Oversee the recruitment, hiring, and orientation of new staff, ensuring all personnel are qualified and trained.
Manage staff performance, including counseling, discipline, and termination as necessary.
Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in a hospital or long-term care facility.
Current Nursing Home Administrator license or eligibility for licensure as required by the state.
Communication Skills:
Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interactions with personnel, residents, families, visitors, and regulatory agencies.
Decision-Making & Problem-Solving:
Ability to make independent decisions and deal tactfully with complex situations.
Strong problem-solving skills to address operational challenges effectively.
Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to work effectively with personnel, residents, families, and the public, demonstrating patience, tact, and professionalism.
Must be at least 21 years of age and of good moral character.
Knowledge & Expertise:
Advanced training in hospital or long-term care administration.
In-depth understanding of nursing and medical practices, long-term care regulations, and guidelines.
Knowledge of personnel administration laws, regulations, and best practices.
Management Skills:
Ability to plan, organize, and implement programs, goals, and policies to ensure quality care and effective facility operation.
Ability to lead and supervise both professional and non-professional personnel.
Adaptability:
Ability to incorporate new methods and principles into existing practices to improve facility operations.
Maintain a calm and composed demeanor in high-stress situations.
Health & Physical Requirements:
Must be in good physical and emotional health, capable of handling stress and physical demands of the role.
Ability to move throughout the facility, speak clearly, and understand communication from residents and staff.
Ability to lift residents, equipment, and supplies as needed.
Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
Must be able to speak and understand the English language clearly.
Must be able to handle the mental and emotional stress of the position.
Must possess adequate sight and hearing or use prosthetics to meet the requirements of the position.
Must be able to function independently, with flexibility and personal integrity.
Must maintain good general health and emotional stability to work with a diverse population of residents and staff.
Ability to lift residents and medical supplies as needed.
