Institutional Research Engineer

Position Description:

The Institutional Research Engineer will assist the Director of Institutional Research with the collection of institutional data. The position will also create or extend reporting and software solutions utilizing data from the institution's ERP system using Transact-SQL, object-oriented programming, and a server-based reporting software, and will also be responsible for the design, development and administration of custom software application databases.

Full-Time, 37.5 hrs/wk, 12 Month, 1950 Annual Hours, Flexible/Alternative Schedule, distribution of hours, days and months based on institutional need.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for development of custom software solutions starting with discussing business requirements with users. Analyzing and interpreting requirements and translating them into functional code for custom solutions and document work under the supervision of the Director of Institutional Research.
  2. Take a pro-active approach and identify where programming or automation may improve efficiency and/or accuracy for other departments. Discuss with the supervisor on possible solutions that could be provided.
  3. Debug, test and maintain custom software and reports that interface with other applications including the student information system (SIS).
  4. Assist users with identifying report requirements and develop ad-hoc or reusable reports using reporting tools.
  5. Develop and maintain integrations using Integration Services for ETL to share data between custom software, third-party software and the SIS.
  6. Write and update technical documentation and user manuals.
  7. Utilize ACC's ticket management system to track issues. Keep requestors updated and provide summary upon ticket closure.
  8. Assist the Director of Institutional Research by collecting and auditing data to support planning, assessment and decision making for the end-user community and for mandated reporting.
  9. Support the Office of Information Technology needs as directed by the Director of Institutional Research.
  10. Maintain an active membership in relevant data committees such as Michigan Community College Data Evaluation Committee (MCCDEC) and Michigan Association of Institutional Research (MiAIR).
  11. Presence on the job is an employee's fundamental obligation. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Expected Hours of Work: Time and service expected is dependent upon institutional needs. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. College daily starting and ending time shall be established by the College Executive Council or its designee.

Travel: Limited travel may be required on occasion.

Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Effort: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit for extended periods of time; and have sufficient hand, arm and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Requirements

Position Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor degree in computer science required.
  2. Minimum of three to five years' experience in the related field.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in relational database management systems (SQL Server preferred).
  4. Excellent customer service skills and ability to interact with others in a kind and courteous manner.
  5. Experience with Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL including stored procedures, functions and ad-hoc queries required.
  6. Experience with organizational reporting.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of relational database design principles and best practices.
  8. Experience with .NET programming in Visual Studio using ASP.NET and C# and VB required.
  9. Demonstrated knowledge of mathematics and statistical methods applicable to the use of information processing systems.
  10. MOS Certification required in Excel, or successful completion within six (6) months of date of hire.
  11. Working knowledge of client/server applications and network systems.
  12. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required.
  13. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required.
  14. Strong documentation skills required.
