Cnc Operator

This role focuses on developing, programming, setting up, and operating CNC equipment to produce high-precision components in a manufacturing environment. You will create and optimize CNC programs, interpret engineering documentation, perform independent setups, and ensure that all parts meet strict quality and dimensional requirements. The position requires strong technical aptitude, hands-on machining experience, and the ability to collaborate closely with engineers, machinists, and production staff to support efficient and reliable manufacturing operations.

• Develop and write CNC programs using G-code and other relevant programming languages to produce precision components.
• Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to determine machining requirements, including dimensions, tolerances, tooling, and feed rates.
• Set up and operate CNC machines, including Swiss CNC, mills, and lathes, to manufacture parts according to specifications.
• Perform complete, independent setups by selecting appropriate tooling, installing bar feeders, and setting work and tool offsets.
• Adjust machine settings, select tools, and optimize feed and speed rates to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability of CNC programs.
• Conduct test runs and make necessary adjustments to ensure that parts meet all quality, precision, and dimensional standards.
• Identify and resolve issues that arise during the manufacturing process, including tooling, programming, and dimensional problems.
• Set up, adjust, and maintain all equipment used in daily machining activities to ensure reliable and consistent operation.
• Operate machines in accordance with company standards, policies, and procedures to maintain safety and quality.
• Maximize machine uptime and part yield by monitoring performance and proactively addressing potential issues.
• Perform prescribed start-up and shut-down checks on assigned machines and ensure all safety protocols are followed.
• Report and/or correct any discrepancies found during machine checks or production runs.
• Maintain a detailed log of events, including machine status, issues encountered, and corrective actions taken for assigned machines.
• Perform and record all in-process inspections on parts as required, and promptly report and correct any discrepancies.
• Monitor and maintain or report deviations from standard cycle times or setup times for each job.
• Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of debris to support safety and efficiency.
• Measure parts using micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments to verify conformance to specifications.
• Follow both written and verbal instructions accurately and consistently throughout the production process.
• Recognize when to seek help or guidance and escalate issues appropriately to ensure quality and safety.
• Use an eye loupe and/or microscope at 5x magnification to inspect small parts and critical features.
• Handle small parts with sufficient dexterity to avoid damage and ensure accurate assembly or inspection.
• Read and interpret drawings, technical data, and inspection requirements to guide machining and quality checks.
• Collaborate closely with engineers, machinists, and other production personnel to ensure successful manufacturing outcomes.
• Keep detailed records of machining processes, program changes, and maintenance activities to support traceability and continuous improvement.
• Perform any other related duties required to support machining operations and meet production goals.

• Minimum 5 to 7 years of overall CNC machining experience, with at least 3 years focused specifically on Swiss setup and operation or Swiss-style automatic lathes.
• Experience programming 3-axis and 5-axis CNC mills.
• Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
• Ability to read and understand manuals and engineering documentation.
• Strong knowledge of CNC programming languages, particularly G-code, and related programming practices.
• Proficiency in CAD and CAM software tools used for CNC programming and part design.
• Working knowledge of Solidworks and related engineering or programming software.
• Strong mathematical skills, including trigonometry and geometry, to support accurate programming and problem solving.
• Experience using and/or programming manual, semi-automated, or automated tools and machines such as lathes and grinders.
• Ability to use precision measuring tools, including calipers, micrometers, optical comparators, and gauges, to take accurate measurements.
• Ability to identify and resolve issues that arise during the manufacturing process, including dimensional and process-related problems.
• High level of accuracy, precision, and attention to detail in all machining and inspection tasks.
• Excellent manual dexterity for handling small parts and performing fine, detailed work.
• Strong analytical abilities to evaluate machining results and process performance.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with team members and document work.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions consistently and accurately.
• Ability to use an eye loupe and/or microscope at 5x magnification for detailed inspection work.

• Experience working with various metals, including steel, titanium, and niobium.
• Completion of a technical or associate degree program is a plus.
• Vocational school training or completion of an apprenticeship in machining or a related field is preferred.
• Experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment operating CNC and manual equipment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot machining and programming issues.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records of machining processes, inspections, and maintenance activities.
• Capability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a production team.

This position is based in a machine shop and manufacturing facility that operates standard production equipment, including CNC mills, lathes, Swiss-style automatic lathes, grinders, and related tools. You will work with various metals such as steel, titanium, and niobium and use standard power tools and precision measuring instruments as part of daily activities. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., providing consistent daytime hours. The role requires the ability to safely access and navigate operations and production areas, lift up to 25 pounds when needed, and work around active machinery in a structured, safety-conscious environment. The workspace emphasizes cleanliness and organization, and you will be expected to maintain a tidy work area while adhering to all safety and operational procedures.

This is a Contract position based out of Santa Cruz, CA.

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $45.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
