Description JOB SUMMARY: The Environmental Services Supervisor supports the Environmental Services Director in coordinating the daily operations of the Environmental Services Department across NMMC facilities, including the hospital, Medical OfficeBuilding (MOB), Forest Hill, and offsite locations such as ACADIA Family Health Center, clinics, apartments, and retail pharmacies. The Supervisor supports the Environmental Services Director with providing oversight of Environmental Services staff . The Supervisor assists inmaintaining environmental cleaning standards that support patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance, monitors workload distribution to ensure equity among staff, and helps maintain a safe and sanitary environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This is a front-facing position. The Environmental Services Supervisor works closely with the Director to ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational standards and assists with performance evaluations and professional development initiatives. Responsibilities include monitoring cleanliness work, coaching staff, reviewing checklists, and ensuring compliance with departmental cleaning standards that support patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory requirements. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Operational Oversight Provides direct supervision of Environmental Services staff in conjunction with the Environmental Services Director, ensuring adherence to departmental cleaning standards, infection prevention protocols, and safety procedures. Coordinates daily Environmental Services operations including: Staff assignments Workload distribution Bed turnover and discharge cleaning prioritization Special cleaning requests and urgent response needs Monitors daily workload inequities among the Environmental Services team in conjunction with the Environmental Services Director, ensuring fair and efficient allocation of staff resources. Assists the Environmental Services Director in ensuring environmental cleaning practices support compliance with regulatory agencies including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, The Joint Commission, and applicable state health regulations. Adjusts staffing assignments during staff absences or operational fluctuations in conjunction with the Environmental Services Director to maintain adequate service coverage. Staff Leadership and Development 6. Provides leadership, coaching, and performance feedback to Environmental Services staff in conjunction with the Environmental Services Director to promote accountability, teamwork, and service excellence. 7. Assists with onboarding and training of new employees and ensures staff competency in departmental procedures and safety protocols. 8. Assists with performance evaluations of Environmental Services staff under coordination from the Environmental Services Director. 9. Supports professional development initiatives and presents training topics during Environmental Services staff meetings as assigned. 10. Maintains a minimum of five (5) hours of leadership and professional development training annually related to supervisory practices and team development. Quality Assurance & Infection Prevention 11. Conducts environmental cleaning audits, including Glo-Germ audits, to ensure compliance with departmental cleaning standards and infection prevention practices. Monitors and verifies required documentation logs including: Cubicle curtains Refrigerators Emergency Eyewash Stations Other environmental monitoring logs. Reports audit findings and operational concerns to the Environmental Services Director and assists with corrective action planning when necessary. Collaborates with Infection Prevention and Nursing departments to support environmental cleaning standards and infection prevention initiatives. Floor Maintenance Program Oversight Oversees the Environmental Services floor care program, ensuring appropriate maintenance of all hard surface and carpeted flooring throughout NMMC facilities. Coordinates and monitors floor maintenance activities including: Floor stripping and refinishing Burnishing and buffing schedules Mat service, Carpet extraction and spot cleaning Preventative floor care maintenance programs. Ensures proper use, maintenance, and storage of floor care equipment and chemicals. Assists the Environmental Services Director in evaluating floor care systems, equipment, and products to maintain facility appearance and safety. Safety, Facilities, and Equipment Identifies maintenance deficiencies, environmental hazards, or safety concerns and reports them through the appropriate work order systems including Facility Dude. Ensures staff follow appropriate PPE, isolation cleaning protocols, and chemical safety procedures. Assists with monitoring inventory levels for cleaning supplies, disinfectants, and floor care products. Communication and Collaboration Maintains timely and effective communication with the Environmental Services Director regarding operational concerns, staff issues, and departmental needs. Serves as a liaison between Environmental Services and other departments including Nursing, Facilities, and Infection Prevention. Supports departmental participation in organizational committees and safety initiatives as assigned. Performs additional duties as necessary to ensure effective delivery of Environmental Services operations. Requirements EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent required. Prior leadership or supervisory experience required , preferably in a healthcare Environmental Services or related setting. Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare environmental cleaning procedures. Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Environmental Services, Business, or related field. Experience in hospital Environmental Services operations. Licenses & Certifications Required: Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) credential through the American Hospital Association. Timeframe to obtain CHESP certification based on education level: High school diploma or equivalent: within 5 years of hire Associate's degree: within 4 years of hire Bachelor's degree: within 3 years of hire Must maintain CHESP certification in good standing once obtained. Preferred: Additional training or certifications in leadership, infection prevention, safety, or supervisory practices.
