R.N. and Bachelors Degree
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's Degree, does not have to be in nursing
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or board of education.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems including several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust/focus.
Work Environment:
Office is usually with main office. Move from school to school depending on number of schools you are responsible for.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide health assessments
- Obtain a health history
- Screen and evaluate findings of deficit in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc.
- Identify abnormal health findings.
- Develop and implement a student health plan.
- Interpret the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
- Initiates referral to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention and follow-through.
- Utilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
- Maintain, evaluate and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.
- Plans and implements school health management protocols.
- Develop procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses.
- Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases.
- Counsel with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices.
- Serve as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.
- Provide consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district.
- Where applicable, participates in the IEP plan development.
Knowledge Of:
- Principles and practices underlying professional nursing.
- Principles and practices underlying the special field of school health.
- Current trends in nursing and of literature in the field of school health.
- State and local laws relating to health and social issues.
Ability To:
- Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing.
- Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
- Communicate appropriately and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, etc.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
- Organize a clinic and manage time.
- Be a self-starter or self-motivated.
- Use a computer and various software applications.
