Crisis Advocate (On-Call)

What You'll Do Angeline’s is a Day Center for homeless women, serving 75 women daily. The Crisis Advocate provides supportive services that help participants identify strengths, assess needs, and develop action plans to encourage stabilization. This role requires a critical, anti‑racism lens and commitment to social justice principles. Expectations for Your Role Provide a welcoming, safe environment by building trust and professional rapport with clients. Staff the front desk, monitor cameras, and respond to callers and visitors. Offer support and encouragement to clients transitioning out of homelessness. Assist in navigating the social service system, obtaining personal identification, applying for public assistance benefits, enrolling in Medicaid, and connecting clients to Employment Specialists at WorkSource. Help with housing applications, advocate by connecting with landlords, and assist in housing searches. Provide crisis intervention and de‑escalation as needed and model positive behavior. Coordinate group activities and community meetings with clients. Read relevant documents to stay current with internal events, policies, and procedures. Monitor outside activity and ensure sidewalks are safe and clear. Participate in staff meetings and trainings, and collaborate with Housing Support Specialists and Rapid Rehousing Case Managers. Encourage a supportive community environment by coordinating activities and workshops that meet clients’ needs. Actively engage in the agency‑wide Race & Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) and strive for racially equitable outcomes; create and maintain a safe community for people of color, trans, and gender‑non‑conforming individuals and others who encounter systemic oppression. Incorporate the YWCA’s Social Justice Initiative by understanding how racism, sexism, classism, and other oppressions intersect and are embedded in institutions. Must Haves to Be Successful At least two years of direct social service experience, preferably in a shelter setting or working with a homeless population. Ability to work effectively and empathetically with clients who have mental health and chemical‑related issues. Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations and follow correct safety procedures. Strong client‑centered approach, skill in building professional rapport, and the ability to maintain positive relationships with clients. Commitment to diversity, including sensitivity to the needs of clients, staff, and volunteers from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Excellent organizational and record‑keeping skills with accurate and complete records. Obtain CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire. Work independently, proactively solve problems, and make sound judgments without on‑site supervision; contribute to a team environment as needed. Maintain confidentiality. Basic proficiency with computer skills and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel). Experience working with communities of color and people from cultures different than your own. Hours, Rates, & Benefits Hourly Range: $27.00 Hours: on an as‑needed basis On‑call staff qualify for sick and safe leave. Employees may enroll voluntarily in the Fidelity 403b Plan at the time of hire. Mental Health Considerations All employees may be at risk of secondary trauma. Employees are encouraged to seek external support and maintain self‑care routines when working directly or indirectly with clients. Physical Requirements Exposure to clients with trauma, domestic violence, sexual violence, homelessness, unemployment, or financial hardship. Use of speech and hearing to exchange information with clients, staff, employers, community representatives, and other individuals. Frequent sitting for extended periods while performing desktop activities. Continuous standing and walking while performing duties in the center. Frequent use of hands and wrists for handling, grasping, and reaching, including with telephones, computers, kitchen equipment, donations, and supplies. Occasional pushing and pulling up to ten pounds. Frequent lifting and carrying of supplies weighing up to fifty pounds.
