Professor, Speech - South Campus PRIMARY FUNCTION: Faculty members are expected to be effective teachers, to maintain current knowledge in their fields, and to have pedagogic skills that are appropriate for our students. Faculty members are also expected to continue development of their knowledge and skills, to contribute to the community of scholars, and to represent the College in the community. All employees of San Jacinto College are expected to demonstrate the values of the institution. Additionally, faculty members are expected to: Serve as an academic leader and mentor Design and deliver engaging, rigorous coursework that fosters critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and practical application of knowledge Create an abstract learning environment Assess student performance with fairness and clarity Adapt teaching strategies to meet all learning needs Beyond classroom instruction, faculty members must: Contribute to curriculum development Uphold academic standards Inspire students to achieve their full potential as scholars and professionals Responsibilities Teaching Keep up with developments in the field of study. Demonstrates high standards—academic and professional. Evaluates student work constructively and provides timely feedback. Teaches at times and locations that meet student needs. Provides access to students through posted conference hours, electronic communications, and other appropriate methods and responds to inquiries in a timely manner. Reviews, evaluates, and recommends student learning materials. Develops and uses a syllabus and course information materials for each course, laboratory, or clinical setting within state, college, and departmental guidelines. Professional Development Maintains high standards of competence in the discipline(s) and teaching methodologies through professional development activities. Plans, develops, and uses effective teaching methods and materials which assist students in meeting course objectives, are appropriate for students with varied educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles, and engage the students in learning. Reviews, evaluates, reflects, and revises program curricula and teaching methods through a self‑evaluation process of self‑reflection. Meets or exceeds professional standards, state‑mandated guidelines, requirements of business/industry, and higher education, as appropriate to the discipline. Service Actively participates in college meetings and/or committees, task forces, and councils. Participates in college-related activities such as registration, community education, recruitment of students, student retention, and faculty selection. Participates in college activities for students/student organizations to aid in retention. Participates in business and community activities that foster goodwill and promote the mission and values of the college. Participates in activities required to maintain program and college accreditation standards. Participates in setting departmental goals, in developing college budgets that support the goals, and in planning for achieving those goals. Promotes and maintains departmental affiliation agreements and other partnerships with other institutions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Overall responsibility to teach (5) sections per term for the Fall and Spring sessions. These courses may include Introduction to Speech Communication, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication and Business & Professional Communication. Strong communication skills, knowledge, skills, and abilities relative to teaching area. Well‑versed in student‑centered and content‑based instruction. Required Education Master's degree or above with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate hours in Speech. Preferred Experience Prior community college Speech teaching experience. Prior dual credit or high school teaching experience. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. Note: Faculty are assigned to teach courses using various delivery methods based on the teaching area and the needs of students and the College, which may require a physical presence at the assigned on‑site work location. Faculty will make 15 hour load with face‑to‑face classes. Faculty may teach multiple classes on high school or early college high school campuses, including those starting at 7:15 AM. Minimum physical presence for faculty is 35‑hours per week. Salary Grade: MAST Salary is based on the Board‑approved salary schedule for the current fiscal year. See Salary Schedule.
