Lead Psychiatrist

Job Summary Position: Lead Psychiatrist (Psychiatrist IV) Location: San Antonio State Hospital, San Antonio, TX Salary: $23,068.08 – $25,432.58 per month (Monthly) Schedule: Day schedule; may require travel up to 10% and occasional alternate shifts. Key Responsibilities Perform advanced psychiatric work under the direction of the SH Medical Director, including examination, diagnosis, and treatment of patients. Administer specialized psychiatric treatments and procedures, manage medication therapy, and conduct medication reviews in accordance with policy and regulatory standards. Lead and coordinate a multidisciplinary recovery team, develop person‑centered psychiatric recovery plans, and guide the implementation of interventions. Supervise, assign, and provide leadership to other psychiatrists, clinic staff, and staff across disciplines. Monitor clinical quality through data analysis, reviews, and audits; recommend improvements and present findings to leadership. Participate in committees, including the State Hospital Governing Body, performance‑improvement activities, and mandatory training. Provide clinical consultation and collaboration with other medical disciplines and external agencies. Support disaster response, continuity of operations, and any facility‑wide clinical needs. Maintain open communication with the Medical Director, Superintendent, and central office leadership regarding patient care and quality initiatives. Essential Job Functions The responsibilities listed above constitute the essential functions of the position. The Lead Psychiatrist must be able to perform all duties with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of general psychiatry practices, psychiatric treatment protocols, and evidence‑based recovery plans. Ability to conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, prescribe appropriate medication, and manage polypharmacy. Proficiency in using electronic health records and Microsoft Office Suite. Strong leadership, team‑building, communication, and conflict‑resolution skills. Experience developing policies, supervising staff, and delivering training. Awareness of regulatory frameworks: TJC, CMS, TAC, HHSC policy, etc. Capability to maintain quality improvement initiatives and comply with state statutes. Licensure & Certification Licensed medical doctor (unrestricted) in Texas with a valid DEA registration. Board certified or eligible in Psychiatry in Texas. Registered as a National Provider Identifier (NPI) and enrolled as a Medicaid/Medicare Part B provider. Qualifications At least four (4) years of experience as a psychiatrist. At least four (4) years of experience working with individuals with psychiatric disorders. Residency training required. Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age; certain facilities require 21. Additional Information Applicants may be required to work overtime, travel, and participate in disaster response or continuity of operations. Telework is not available for this position.
