Of Counsel Attorney - Nonprofit Law
For Purpose Law Group
Job Description
Job Description
Description:
For Purpose Law Group (FPLG) serves nonprofits and purpose-driven organizations that are doing meaningful work and want counsel that helps them do it with clarity, confidence, and strong compliance. We’re growing and looking for experienced attorneys with nonprofit experience (preferred) and a solid transactional foundation to join our network of Of Counsel attorneys.
This role is a strong match for an attorney who enjoys being a steady, practical advisor, someone who can translate complex legal issues into clear options, draft with precision, and support mission-driven leaders as they navigate growth.
Our clients rely on us not just for technical legal knowledge, but for thoughtful guidance that helps their organizations operate responsibly and sustainably. Attorneys who work with FPLG appreciate the opportunity to provide high-quality legal counsel while supporting organizations that are making a real impact in their communities.
This is a remote position. We are currently seeking attorneys actively licensed and barred in California, Texas, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, and New York , with California strongly preferred . But are hoping to expand to more states very soon!
The WorkAs Of Counsel, you’ll work with nonprofit and purpose-driven clients on the legal issues that matter most to their stability and success. Your work will be primarily advisory and transactional. You may be helping a founder set up a clean governance structure and compliance plan, counseling a board through a complex decision, or reviewing a key contract that protects the organization while keeping momentum high.
On a practical level, the role may include drafting and reviewing contracts; preparing and revising formation and governance documents (including bylaws, policies, and core corporate records); advising on state and federal compliance matters; and supporting exemption-related work where appropriate.
You may also assist with reviewing matters that involve state-specific nonprofit regulations within your licensed jurisdiction , helping ensure our clients remain compliant with the legal requirements that apply to their organizations.
Internally, you’ll partner with our legal team to ensure matters are well-documented, clearly structured, and moving forward with consistent strategy. We place a strong emphasis on excellent client experience, so clear communication, reliable follow-through, and organized matter management are central to how we practice.
Our Core ValuesAt FPLG, our work is grounded in a set of core values that guide how we serve our clients and support one another as a team. We approach challenges with Proactive Resourcefulness , communicate with empathy and clarity through Compassionate Communication , and bring deep knowledge and confidence to our work through Unapologetic Expertise .
We believe strong teams are built through Inclusive Teamwork and by actively Building Our Community . We strive to create an environment where people feel connected, supported, and able to enjoy working together. Laughter is encouraged, collaboration is expected, and we recognize that we are all working toward shared goals.
We also value Uncompromising Authenticity , encouraging our team members to show up as themselves while taking ownership of their work and responsibilities. Our team members support one another, communicate openly, and take pride in contributing to a professional environment built on trust, accountability, and mutual respect.
Engagement StructureThis role is structured as an Of Counsel relationship with the firm and is not a full-time employee position .
Work is assigned on an as-needed basis depending on client matters and jurisdictional needs. Many Of Counsel attorneys assist with matters involving state-specific nonprofit regulations, provide jurisdictional review, or offer subject-matter insight related to their licensed state or their primary practice area.
Depending on their experience, they may also contribute guidance in specialized areas of nonprofit law where they have developed deeper expertise.
Compensation is provided on an hourly contract basis under a standing engagement agreement with the firm , with separate hourly rates for legal work and administrative time.
About For Purpose Law GroupAt For Purpose Law Group (FPLG), we are more than just a law firm. We are a team of dedicated advocates for the nonprofit sector.
Our mission is to empower nonprofits, social enterprises, and purpose-driven organizations by providing exceptional legal services rooted in integrity, expertise, and a deep commitment to building stronger communities.
Joining FPLG means becoming part of a collaborative, mission-driven environment where your expertise is valued, your growth is supported, and your work contributes to meaningful impact.
Requirements: Qualifications- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law and in good standing in California, Texas, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, or New York (California strongly preferred).
- At least 3–6 years of legal experience , ideally including nonprofit governance, regulatory compliance, transactional drafting, or business law.
- Experience advising nonprofit organizations, social enterprises, or mission-driven businesses.
- Strong commitment to mission-driven organizations and the social impact sector.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative remote team environment.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Comfortable using legal technology, case management systems, and digital collaboration tools.
Of Counsel attorneys working with FPLG are trusted professionals who provide reliable legal guidance and collaborate with the firm to ensure our client matters remain legally sound and compliant within the relevant jurisdictions.
In this role you will:
- Provide jurisdiction-specific legal guidance on nonprofit laws and regulatory requirements within your licensed state.
- Review legal strategies, documents, and compliance approaches for alignment with applicable state laws.
- Provide clear legal analysis and practical recommendations that help matters move forward efficiently.
- Draft or review contracts, governance documents, formation materials, and other nonprofit transactional work when appropriate.
- Maintain clear documentation and written guidance to support collaboration with the internal legal team.
- Communicate promptly with the firm’s legal team regarding questions, timelines, or additional information needed.
- Collaborate with FPLG attorneys to support a consistent and high-quality client experience.
- Complete assigned work in a timely and professional manner consistent with an Of Counsel relationship.
- Strong legal writing, drafting, and analytical skills.
- Ability to evaluate legal questions within your jurisdiction and provide clear, practical legal guidance .
- Comfort working independently while collaborating with a remote legal team.
- Excellent communication skills and a professional client-service mindset.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to review legal work thoughtfully and provide clear feedback or guidance when needed.
- Comfort working in a cloud-based legal environment and using modern legal technology.
- Ability to maintain organized documentation and correspondence to support collaborative legal work.
- Professional reliability and follow-through on assigned matters.
We’re looking for attorneys who bring strong legal judgment and a service-oriented mindset. Our clients rely on us not only for legal knowledge, but for practical guidance they can trust.
This role is ideal for attorneys who are self-directed, take ownership of their work, and take pride in delivering thoughtful legal solutions within a collaborative team environment . Successful attorneys at FPLG are proactive, communicate clearly, and approach client matters with both professionalism and care.
Because we operate as a collaborative team, our attorneys work closely with colleagues across the firm to ensure clients receive consistent, high-quality support.
If you’re an experienced attorney who enjoys thoughtful advisory work and wants to support organizations doing meaningful work, we would be glad to learn more about you.
We welcome applications from attorneys who value professionalism, collaboration, and the opportunity to help nonprofits and purpose-driven organizations operate with confidence and strong legal foundations.
