Field Training Officer (FTO)

At Union Emergency Medical Unit, our Field Training Officers will play a crucial role in shaping onboarding Union EMU members, so it's essential for them to possess a variety of qualities to effectively guide and mentor. The role of the FTO is essential in ensuring that onboarding members are well‑prepared to handle the demands of emergency medical care, function effectively as a secondary EMT on a crew, and to provide high‑quality service to our community. Basic Responsibilities: Orientation : Introducing onboarding members to UEMU, UEMU protocols and policies Providing Hands‑On Training : Supervising and guiding onboarding members as they respond to emergency calls. Ensuring that onboarding members understand and follow medical protocols during patient assessments, treatments, and transport. Familiarizing onboarding members with the equipment and tools used in the field. Skill Development : Observing and assisting onboarding members in performing various medical procedures such as patient assessment, intervention provision, and medication administration. Offering constructive feedback on clinical skills, communication, and decision‑making. Patient Care Monitoring : Ensuring the quality of patient care delivered by onboarding members is up to standards. Evaluating how well onboarding members interact with patients, family members, and other medical personnel during transport and care. Documentation and Reporting : Training onboarding members on how to properly document patient care, including history, assessments, treatments, and outcomes. Ensuring that all required reports and patient care records are accurately completed. Providing Feedback : Offering regular, detailed feedback on performance, pointing out areas for improvement. Conducting evaluations of the onboarding member’s performance and submitting reports to the FTEP Coordinator in the form of a DOR (Daily Observation Report). Safety and Protocol Adherence : Ensuring that onboarding member’s follow safety procedures to protect themselves, their partners, and the patients. Teaching the importance of following established medical protocols and department policies. Mentorship and Emotional Support : Being a role model for professional behavior, ethics, and patient care. Offering support and advice on handling the emotional and psychological challenges that come with the job, especially in high‑stress situations. Assessing Readiness : Evaluating whether the onboarding member is ready for independent fieldwork. Ensuring the trainee has gained the confidence and competence to work without supervision. Strongly preferred qualifications include: Strong Clinical Knowledge and Skills : In‑depth understanding of medical protocols, procedures, and the ability to handle a wide range of emergencies. Demonstrates proficiency in patient care and decision‑making under pressure. Leadership Abilities : Capable of guiding, mentoring, and inspiring new UEMU members. Ability to make quick, informed decisions in high‑stress situations. Provides constructive feedback and fosters an environment of continuous learning. Excellent Communication Skills : Clear and concise communication with patients, team members, and other emergency personnel. Ability to explain complex medical concepts to less experienced members in an understandable way. Active listening skills to ensure feedback and concerns from onboarding members are heard and addressed. Patience and Empathy : Demonstrates patience when working with onboarding UEMU members, understanding that they are learning and growing. Empathy for patients, as well as the ability to coach and support onboarding members through difficult situations. Adaptability and Flexibility : Ability to adjust teaching styles based on the needs of different onboarding members. Comfortable with unpredictable situations and the ability to adapt to changing field conditions. Professionalism : Upholds the highest ethical standards and professionalism at all times. Acts as a role model for trainees in terms of behavior, appearance, and attitude. Problem‑Solving and Critical Thinking : Ability to think critically and make decisions in high‑pressure, emergency situations. Demonstrates sound judgment when evaluating medical conditions, patient needs, and team dynamics. Organizational Skills : Well‑organized, able to keep track of trainees’ progress, provide proper documentation, and manage multiple tasks. Able to structure and plan field training sessions effectively, ensuring all aspects of the job are covered. Confidence and Calm Under Pressure : Exudes confidence while maintaining a calm demeanor in chaotic or stressful situations. Onboarding members should feel they can rely on the FTO for guidance during difficult calls. Ability to Provide Constructive Feedback : Gives clear, actionable feedback that helps trainees improve without discouraging them. Strikes a balance between praise and constructive criticism to foster growth. Team‑Oriented Mindse t : Demonstrates strong teamwork skills and encourages cooperation within the EMS team. Promotes a collaborative learning environment for trainees to develop their skills as part of a team. Physical and Mental Stamina : Able to handle long shifts, physically demanding situations, and emotionally taxing calls. Resilient and able to manage stress and prevent burnout. Commitment to Safety : Ensures the safety of both patients and trainees at all times. Enforces safety protocols, including proper use of equipment and personal protective measures. Open‑Minded and Receptive to Change : Willing to learn and grow, both personally and professionally, to keep up with new EMS techniques, equipment, and protocols. Encourages innovation and change, ensuring trainees are prepared for evolving practices. Requirements 6 months continuous experience in good standing with Union EMU NJ EMT Certification
