Athletic Health Care Trainer This posting is being used to fill Athletic Health Care Trainer positions at the specified location. Salary All new external applicants will be placed on the initial step of the salary range. However, placement above the initial step of the salary range will be based on special characteristics and critical needs of the position, an applicant’s exceptional qualifications, the availability of funds, and other relevant factors. Such appointments require prior approval. Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed on the salary range in accordance with Department regulations. Athletic Health Care Trainer, SR-22: $5,369.00 - $6,535.00 per month Responsibilities Develops and implements standard operating procedures for the school's athletic health care program and training facility in accordance with departmental guidelines. Procedures include coverage during practice and games; use of therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation protocols; injury procedures; emergency situation plans; and record keeping requirements. Conducts pre‑participation evaluations to screen for injury/illness risk factors associated with participation in competitive athletics. Works with coaches to develop and implement effective training and conditioning programs for student athletes. Advise the athletic director and/or coaches on the appropriate selection and proper fitting of protective equipment. Monitors athletic activities and events for potential safety hazards and/or conditions and calls them to the attention of proper school officials. Advise the athletic director or coaches to restrict, alter or cancel athletic activities if the safety and health of students are threatened. Applies protective or injury‑preventive devices, such as tape, bandages or braces. Conducts initial evaluation following acute injury. Examines athlete’s status with regard to history, mechanism, observation, palpation, range of motion, muscular strength, functional joint stability, and neurological status. Analyzes athlete’s condition and makes decision on the management of the acute injury. Provides appropriate first aid and emergency cardiac care (including CPR) and/or refers the student athlete to a physician. In the absence of a physician, determines whether the injured athlete may resume participation in athletic activities. Provides pertinent information to physicians or other allied health care professionals. Following physician’s evaluation and diagnosis of an injury, develops and supervises an appropriate, safe and effective rehabilitation program for the injured athlete including the use of a variety of therapeutic modalities (electric stimulation, ultrasound, diathermy, traction, intermittent compression, joint mobilization, etc.). Modifies the program within the framework of the healing process and/or in accordance with the physician’s instructions. Designs, constructs and fits orthotic devices. Supervises the operation of therapeutic devices and equipment. Monitors athlete’s appropriate reintegration into program activities. Serves as a resource person and provides technical assistance to coaches, teachers and other personnel regarding the health care of students and student athletes. Determines need for supplies and equipment, repair and maintenance services, etc. Consults specific catalogs and manuals to obtain desired information, prepare and submit purchase orders. May supervise assistants, volunteers and student athletic trainers (UH student interns) in the performance of athletic training activities. Organizes and implements in‑service educational programs for coaches and other school personnel. Counsels and advises coaches, student athletes and parents on matters regarding rehabilitation and treatment of specific injuries. May conduct classes on athletic training and sports medicine topics as requested. Disseminates pertinent information to student athletes, parents, coaches and other target groups. Certification Requirements Current certification as an athletic trainer from the NATABOC. Current certification in ECC from the American Red Cross (CPR/AED for the professional rescuer), American Heart Association (BLS for health‑care providers CPR/AED or advanced cardiac life support) or National Safety Council (professional rescuer CPR). Registration and License Requirements Applicants must be registered with the Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs (DCCA) as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Hawaii at the time of employment. Applicants must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Hawaii. Requirements Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Calculation of experience is based on full‑time, 40‑hour workweeks. Part‑time experience is pro‑rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited.
