Position Summary

The Neurosurgical ICU Nurse Educator is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs and professional development initiatives for nursing staff within the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NSICU). This role supports clinical excellence, promotes evidence-based practice, and ensures staff competency through orientation programs, continuing education, simulation training, competency validation, and ongoing professional development.

The Nurse Educator collaborates with nursing leadership, interdisciplinary teams, and organizational stakeholders to foster a culture of lifelong learning, patient safety, and quality outcomes.

Essential Responsibilities

• Develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate educational programs for Neurosurgical ICU nursing staff.
• Facilitate orientation, onboarding, preceptor development, transition-to-practice programs, and annual competency assessments.
• Design and deliver classroom instruction, simulation training, computer-based learning modules, and continuing education programs.
• Collaborate with nursing leadership to identify learning needs and implement evidence-based educational strategies.
• Support clinical competency validation and ongoing professional development initiatives.
• Serve as a resource and mentor for nursing staff, preceptors, and clinical leaders.
• Promote evidence-based practice and support quality improvement initiatives throughout the organization.
• Function as a nurse planner for continuing nursing education activities in accordance with Montana Nurses Association (MNA) and American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) standards.
• Serve as a program administrator for Lippincott Nursing Procedures and other clinical education resources.
• Participate in interdisciplinary committees, regulatory readiness activities, and accreditation initiatives.
• Monitor educational outcomes and revise programs based on quality metrics, staff feedback, and organizational goals.
• Ensure compliance with DNV requirements, organizational policies, and applicable regulatory standards.

• Strong understanding of adult learning principles and nursing professional development practices
• Advanced knowledge of neurocritical care, critical care standards, and evidence-based nursing practice
• Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to build collaborative relationships across interdisciplinary teams
• Strong organizational, analytical, and project management abilities
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, electronic medical records (EMR), learning management systems, and internet-based applications
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
• Demonstrated emotional intelligence, sound clinical judgment, and professional integrity
• Self-directed with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

Schedule Requirements

• Regular and sustained attendance is required.
• Position may require working beyond a standard 40-hour workweek.
• Occasional evenings, weekends, after-hours support, and on-call responsibilities may be necessary to meet organizational and educational needs.
• Ability to work varied shifts to support staff education across all schedules.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Current Montana Registered Nurse (RN) license or eligibility for Montana licensure
• Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in critical care, neuroscience, intensive care, or a related specialty
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience or formal training in education, administration, management, leadership, or staff development
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred

• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Nursing Education, or related field
• Recent experience in a Neurosurgical ICU, Neurocritical Care, or Critical Care setting
• Certification in Nursing Professional Development (NPD-BC) and/or specialty certification such as:
  • CCRN
  • CNRN
  • SCRN
• Instructor certification in one or more of the following:
  • American Heart Association (AHA) courses
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • S.T.A.B.L.E.
  • TeamSTEPPS
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Clinical Nurse Educator, Staff Development Coordinator, or related role
