Recreation Leader - Full Time Drug Screening: MARIJUANA In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety‑sensitive. A test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented, unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law‑enforcement officer/deputy. Job Description We’re looking for an energetic, customer‑focused individual who enjoys working with people of all ages and backgrounds to help create safe, welcoming, and engaging recreational experiences for the Chesapeake community. As a Recreation Leader, you’ll support the daily operations of community centers, recreational programs, facility rentals, and special events. From youth programs and athletics to senior activities, childcare, water playgrounds, and programs for individuals with disabilities, every day offers something different. Key Responsibilities Deliver outstanding customer service and assist participants, families, and visitors with programs, registrations, memberships, rentals, and general inquiries. Support daily community center operations, including opening and closing facilities, facility setup and breakdown, basic housekeeping, inspections, and monitoring participant safety. Assist with recreational programs, special events, childcare, athletics, and other activities while ensuring a positive experience for all participants. Set up and take down tables, chairs, recreational equipment, bleachers, and other event materials. Resolve participant concerns professionally and communicate issues to supervisors as needed. Required Qualifications Education: High school diploma or GED, and any combination of education and experience equivalent to one year of college education in recreation, physical education, or a closely related field. Experience: Minimum of one month full‑time equivalent experience in a related field. Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment. Valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards may be required. Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short‑term department needs and/or City‑wide emergencies. Preferred Qualifications Valid driver’s license required (learner’s permit is not considered valid). Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong customer service orientation. Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds, set up recreational equipment, and work independently. Computer proficiency. Physical Demands Must be able to lift 20–50 lbs. occasionally and up to 20–50 lbs. regularly, stand and walk frequently, and operate recreational equipment safely.
