School Crossing Guard/Traffic Control Officer

The Town of Matthews is seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate individual, that would enjoy working part-time/seasonal work as a crossing guard at one of our premier public elementary schools.

Summary The School Crossing Guard/Traffic Control Officer directs traffic and provides the safe movement of elementary school children walking or bicycling to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections. The scheduled work times are established, but the days per week may vary depending school operations. The position is part-time and generally works approximately 10 hours per week, 1 hour in the morning (7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.) and 1 hour in the afternoon (2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.). The position is required to wear a uniform (Reflective vest marked Traffic Control) and to work outdoors regardless of weather conditions.

Essential Function of the Job

• Reports promptly at the designated time to location of assignment.
• Directs and provides the safe and orderly movement of elementary school children and pedestrians crossing public roadways and intersections; is observant at all times to ensure the safety of the children and themselves.
• Directs and provides the safe and orderly movement of traffic through the school zone.
• Positions themselves in a highly visible and safe location either on the sidewalk or in the roadway to assist children, pedestrians, and vehicle traffic at a designated location.
• Monitors traffic flow to recognize traffic openings which permit them to safely step into and out of traffic.
• Places and removes caution signs and cones.
• Cautions drivers of speeding vehicles by the use of whistles, signs, hand held traffic wands, flashlights and/or hand signals.
• Clears crosswalks of rocks, glass, cans and other items in order to prevent injuries to children.
• Maintains assigned equipment (e.g. stop sign, traffic vest, etc.).
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Tasks

• Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.
• Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places as street and railroad crossings and construction sites.
• Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets.
• Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults.
• Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals.
• Report unsafe behavior of children to school officials or school SRO.
• Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals, and report infractions to appropriate authorities.
• Distribute traffic control signs and markers at designated points.
• Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within assigned area.
• Inform drivers of detour routes as needed.
