Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/Float Pool position at a Level III Trauma Center in Puyallup, WA, primarily supporting ED Hold areas on night shifts with float responsibilities across multiple units.

• Level III Trauma Center with 375 licensed beds in Puyallup, WA
• Assigned to the Nursing Float Pool, primarily supporting the ED Hold unit with float coverage across PCU, ICU, CCU, Med-Surg, Rehab, and other units
• ED Hold is the primary assignment and is a fast-paced unit caring for patients with mixed diagnoses awaiting inpatient beds
• Float areas include MSICU (14 beds), CVICU (10 beds), PCU (40 beds), PCU Obs (18–27 beds), CCU (30 beds), Medical (89 beds), Surgical (55 beds), Flex Unit (9 beds), Inpatient Rehab (47 beds), and COVID overflow
• PCU patient population includes respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and general ortho/surgical cases
• ICU patient population includes respiratory failure, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, CVA, post-arrest, and complex post-operative patients — no craniotomies, major traumas, or major cardiothoracic cases
• Med-Surg patient population includes oncology, ortho, palliative, and general medical/surgical patients including COPD, CHF, sepsis, DVT, AKI, dialysis, and COVID
• Rehab unit cares for neuro patients (stroke, SCI, TBI, multi-trauma) and includes patients on vents and with traches; team model includes RN, LPN, and Tech
• Patient ratios: ICU 1:2, PCU/CCU 1:4, Med-Surg 1:5, Rehab 1:8 (team model); PCU nurses floating to MS will have a 1:5 ratio
• Role includes ACLS transport responsibilities — transporting patients throughout the entire hospital including ED, CT, MRI, Nuc Med, PACU, and Cath Lab; after 2300, transport volume decreases and RN assists the ED Hold unit
• 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
• Must work every other weekend; back-to-back weekends are rare
• No holiday requests, self-scheduling, or on-call
• Schedule is provided at least one week in advance and built in 3-week increments
• Charting system: Epic; equipment includes Alaris and Pyxis
• Float may occur for partial shifts

Requirements

• Active WA RN license or compact RN license (pending license with proof of application date may be accepted)
• Current BLS and ACLS required; NIHSS required for PCU and ICU assignments
• Minimum 1.5 years of PCU experience required for PCU assignments; 1 year of strong PCU experience with excellent references required for PCU/ED Hold assignments; 1 year of ICU experience required for ICU assignments; 1 year of Med-Surg experience required for MS assignments
• PCU skills required: cardiac rhythm interpretation, chest tube management, lumbar drains, traches, and IV medication titration (Amiodarone, dopamine, dobutamine, insulin, heparin)
• ICU skills required: cardiac rhythm interpretation, vent management, invasive line management, ostomy, general drains, and trach care
• Med-Surg skills required: IV placement, PCAs, chest tubes, drains, ostomies, and IV antibiotics
• Strong communication and patient teaching/education skills required
• Must be flexible, resourceful, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment
• Two professional references from a supervisor or above (charge nurse, manager, or director) required prior to start — one reference may be submitted at time of consideration
• Telemetry competency exam must be completed and passed prior to start
• COVID vaccine required; medical and religious exemptions are accepted

Additional Information

• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Orientation includes 2 days of hospital-wide onboarding (system access, modules, etc.) and 1 day on the assigned unit; travelers receive up to 4 hours of orientation when floating to a new unit
• Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 and provides just-in-time training for vent and trach management on the Rehab unit
• Unit support includes patient care techs (ICU 1:14, PCU 1:10, MS 1:8–10), respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage — all available 24/7
• RN must call the staffing office 30–45 minutes before each shift to receive the unit assignment
• RN must report to the correct unit on time at 0700 or 1900
• Time off requests of up to 5 days may be approved; additional days require manager approval; any approved time off may require extending the assignment end date
