School Counselor

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal

Supervises: None

FLSA Status: Exempt

Board Approved: May ____, 2024. (Under Revision)

Job Goals:
  • To provide a high-quality comprehensive school counseling program for all students.
  • To provide consultative and collaborative services to parents/guardians, faculty/staff, and administrators to support academic development and school success, career development, and personal/social development for students.

Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree or its equivalent from an accredited university, representing coursework in the principles and practice of educational guidance, child growth and development theory, educational testing and measurement, counseling, and the administration of guidance services.
  2. Valid Alabama teaching certificate in school counseling.
  3. Minimum of three years of successful teaching and/or professional experience.
  4. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  6. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  7. Ability to develop curriculum and programming specific to the needs of students.
  8. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  9. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  10. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  11. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Provides school counseling activities in the classroom in collaboration with the teaching staff for each assigned grade level during the school year.
  3. Consults with and is a resource to teachers to facilitate the infusion of school counseling content into the regular education curriculum.
  4. Collaborates with personnel across the district to assist students in making a smooth transition when transferring or promoting to new schools.
  5. Provides orientation activities for incoming students and their parents/guardians.
  6. Utilizes technology to plan and provide instruction and facilitate student learning.
  7. Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for students and staff.
  8. Informs students and parents/guardians of test results and their implications for educational and career planning.
  9. Interprets group or individual test results to faculty and administration for use in enhancing instruction.
  10. Conducts structured, goal-oriented sessions to meet the identified needs of individuals and groups of students.
  11. Plans and conducts staff development programs and activities.
  12. Facilitates conferences with administrators, teachers, parents/guardians and/or students.
  13. Plans and conducts parent/guardian education programs to meet the identified needs of the school community.
  14. Assists families with school-related problems and issues.
  15. Consults with and refers students (and their parents/guardians) with problems to community-based resources including, but not limited to, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, physicians, service agencies, etc.
  16. Cooperates and collaborates with other professionals in enhancing the educational opportunities and experiences of students.
  17. Communicates with administrators, teachers, students, parents/guardians and the community regarding the comprehensive school counseling program and its role in the educational program.
  18. Reviews the comprehensive school counseling program annually with the school counseling team and the school counseling advisory committee.
  19. Administers an annual needs assessment for students, parents/guardians, and teachers and uses the results for program planning.
  20. Establishes and makes available a planning calendar for school counseling activities.
  21. Evaluates the school counseling program.
  22. Attends professional development programs, workshops, and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge.
  23. Serves on school and/or system committees, advisory boards, and/or task forces as needed.
  24. Collects, receipts and submits school funds in accordance with school procedures and Board policy.
  25. Actively supervises students during assigned duty before, during and/or after school as directed.
  26. Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities as assigned.
  27. Assists in the successful administration of State and/or standardized tests by supporting the
    school administrators, building test coordinator and/or the school testing team.
  28. Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
  29. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  30. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  31. Engages in professional growth by attending professional development to improve professional performance and knowledge.
  32. Demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  33. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  34. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  35. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  36. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of equipment and materials.
  37. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  38. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  39. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  40. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the principal and/or supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment : Nine, ten, or twelve-month position in accordance with the Board's salary schedule.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Tuscaloosa County Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
