Applications Support Analyst

Napa Valley College is seeking an Applications Support Analyst for the Institutional Technology department. The incumbent in this position will be providing technical, procedural, and process support for assigned functional areas for application and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) programming; providing user training and support; designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining complex and technical portions of application programming and reporting; and functioning as a project leader for software development. This job reports to the Director, Institutional Technology (IT) Operations.

This is a full-time, 12-months-per-year, classified position. The salary has an appropriate placement on range 30 of the current Classified Salary Schedule. The starting salary range is $81,674 to $94,548/year, with future steps up to $114,924/year. Placement is made based on experience. The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and public employee retirement system membership.

Duties And Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Administers applications and operations for functional areas of the college (e.g. finance, human resources, student, financial aid, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of services to authorized users.
  • Coordinates with other IT professionals at the college (e.g. cross-training, scheduling, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring cross-functionality and IT coverage for the college.
  • Designs a variety of programs (e.g. reports, queries, software interfaces, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring effective and efficient use of the acquired software applications.
  • Maintains software applications for functional areas of the college (e.g. business applications, student records software, software upgrades, interface scripts, report generation, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient operations under the college's standards.
  • Manages assigned projects and program components (e.g. applications interfaces, updated applications software, etc.) for the purpose of delivering web-services in compliance with established guidelines and objectives.
  • Participates in a variety of planning and development activities (e.g. long-term plans, required updates, new applications, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to support web needs and requirements for the college.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. procedures, system level documentation, reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
  • Provides user training and support for the purpose of functioning as a project leader for software development.
  • Recommends equipment, supplies, and materials (e.g. applications software that meets system requirements, migration to updated software, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring required items and completing jobs efficiently.
  • Researches a variety of work-related topics (e.g. trends, products, equipment, tests, etc.) for the purpose of recommending procedures and purchases.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. staff, administrators, college personnel, outside vendors, service providers, etc.) for the purpose of providing technical assistance and support.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions (e.g. incorrect information generated from queries, software bugs, etc.) for the purpose of resolving operational issues and restoring services.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: utilizing pertinent network, application, operating system monitoring and troubleshooting software; adhering to safety practices; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: current, legacy, and emerging operating systems; environments and network protocols; programming languages; fundamental database architecture and structures; Inter/Intranet applications; data security; project management; processes; and methodology. ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: setting priorities; establishing effective relationships; being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups; conveying technical information to non-technical audiences; working nonstandard hours; and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students. Responsibility: Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services. Work Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment. Experience: Five (5) years of job related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility. Education: Bachelors degree in job-related area. Clearances: Criminal Background Clearance Tuberculosis Clearance Title 8, USC, Section 1324-A requires verification of eligibility for employment in the United States.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with Ellucian Colleague and Ethos.
  • MS SQL systems administration, including SSRS and SSIS.
  • Experience with both data reporting and data integrations between systems.
  • Knowledge of modern API-based integrations, workflows and tools (Javascript, JSON, Postman, etc).
