Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions Assist regular education, special education, and pre‑school students in boarding and exiting special education school buses. Ensure students are properly secured in seatbelts/harnesses and wheelchairs if available. Report any medical problems to the bus driver. Monitor and control behavior of students on the bus. Assist in maintaining discipline and safety on the bus. Write legibly so that others may read and understand. Walk on uneven terrain such as school buses in motion. Able to lift and carry 40 to 60 pounds, as well as bend, stoop, walk, and reach overhead. Physically able to push/pull, squat, twist, and turn. Learn the bus route and inform substitute bus drivers about the route and students. Assist in emergency evacuations if needed. Maintain any student report sheets required for the job and ensure it is turned in by the due date. Turn in timesheets and reports in a timely manner. Attend all necessary in‑services required for the job. Be willing to receive any mandatory training to care for students with special needs. Be able to travel to the school bus driver’s location or home to meet the bus and be on time. Perform other duties as assigned. Will sit in the back seat of the bus to monitor all students. Use of cell phones on the bus is prohibited except in emergencies. Assistants are responsible for calling Transportation as soon as possible if a substitute is needed. Qualifications Must have knowledge of and/or ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions. Must be able to report for work on time and perform the duties of the job for the workday. Must establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees and effectively communicate with the public. Must use good judgment while performing job‑related tasks. Pre‑employment and random drug testing. Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Background check (TBI/FBI/DCS). CPR and First Aid training. Additional Information The bus attendant must have a happy, helpful attitude; be punctual and dependable; follow directions; work cooperatively with the school bus driver and children; protect the confidentiality rights of parents, regular and special education children; model appropriate grammar usage; support safety and good self‑esteem in children; be physically able to push/pull, squat, twist, and turn; and be willing to receive any training necessary to care for students with special needs. Employees in this area will work 5 days a week, 4–5 hours a day, depending on how long the bus route takes per day. The bus attendant reports directly to the Transportation Director. Equipment and Job Location The employee will work on school bus routes and may be exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and bodily fluids, requiring universal precautions. Mental, Physical, Environmental, and Occupational Demands Mental demands: work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress. Physical demands: prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; frequent walking and reaching; frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over). Environmental exposure to sun, heat, cold, inclement weather, noise, vehicle fumes, and biological hazards.
