Position Title : Developmental Specialist II (Early Interventionist)

Reports to: Regional Coordinator, Early Intervention Department


Service Area: varied


Employment Term: 11-month/210 days; Exempt position


Salary/Wage Range: $55,000 - $112,993 New hires are offered up to mid-range, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Summary


The New Mexico School for the Deaf provides a home intervention program for parents of deaf and hard of hearing children ages 0-6 through the Early Intervention (EI) Department. The Developmental Specialist II providing this service is responsible for maintaining contacts/home visits and working toward outcomes in accordance with the Individualized Family Service Plan/ Individualized Service Plan (IFSP/ISP) under Part C of IDEA. Additionally, the Developmental Specialist II provides documentation of intervention activities that include, but are not limited to: contact logs, ongoing assessment information, and Individualized Family Service Plan/ Individualized Service Plan Updates. Resources, mentoring, monitoring, and support are provided by Regional Coordinators and other EI staff. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and receptive manner, while helping to advance the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Has a knowledge of the functions of various evaluation and assessment instruments, specific to this work, and facilitates the participation of families in the assessment process.
  • Participates in the IFSP/ISP processes, providing input based upon observations and assessment data as well as the Family Guided Routines Based Intervention (FGRBI) and Coaching models.
  • Implements a high level of skill and professional knowledge related to deafness, language acquisition, early intervention, and overall young child development in the services they deliver to families and their child.
  • Collaborates as a team member with early childhood agencies and providers.
  • Plans for and implements content-rich home visits and other service delivery interactions which focus on the language, cognitive, and social-emotional needs of children who are Deaf or hard of hearing, addressing these IFSP/ISP outcomes within a family's natural routines.
  • Provides services to families whose children may have other concurrent developmental differences, such as deafblindness or various syndromes.
  • Ensures early intervention services are in compliance with state and federal laws mandates, and standards.
  • Maintains a direct service delivery caseload with fidelity and accuracy related to Part C compliance, timelines, documentation, and content.
  • Explains a young child's language and access needs to families, facilitating the communication and language exploration process by discussing topics related to hearing levels, communication and language development, as well as the communication opportunities available for families and their children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Supports a variety of language modalities, as appropriate to each individual child and family language access needs.
  • Explains (at times in tandem with other professionals) audiograms, hearing assistive technology, including hearing aids and cochlear implants, to families and is able to troubleshoot hearing assistive technology with them.
  • Incorporates curricula (such as SKI*HI) in their home visits which is specific to young Deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.
  • Focuses on early literacy.
  • Employs and ability to deal effectively with a wide range of people in a helpful, positive, and constructive way.
  • Works well both independently and as a team member.
  • Is willing to travel to remotely located home visits.
  • Works a varied schedule based upon family availability for home visits.
Position-Specific Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience : Master's degree or bachelor's degree in Parent Infant-Deaf Education or similar degree required. Experience in providing home-based intervention to families and their children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Other: Possession of or ability to acquire Developmental Specialist II or Developmental Specialist III state certification.
