General Equipment Mechanic

Summary You will serve as a General Equipment Mechanic with National Park Service. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel occasionally within the park on a daily basis. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate. Major Duties Assists with overhauls and repairs to light heavy equipment. This may include end loaders, motor graders, dump trucks, power generators, snow removal equipment. Performs overhauls and repairs to smaller gasoline and diesel powered equipment. This includes pickup trucks, vans, and chain saws, weed wackers, small tractors and attachments. Provides routine servicing to all the above vehicles and equipment using guidelines provided in equipment service manuals. May assist with, or prepare, monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms. Prepares reports using the computer using such programs as Word, Excel, and the FMSS programs. The incumbent must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year from the time of employment (EOD) Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Federal Wage System (FWS) positions. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching and stooping. Often works on top of and under equipment in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting.Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, etc. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. Inside work is performed in crowded conditions. When working inside, worker is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures and noise that is difficult to talk above. When working outside, worker is exposed to bad weather. Incumbent often works in rain, mud, snow and cold. Inside and outside the worker is exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, rain, snow, cold, and fumes and from working on hard damp floors or ground. Works on parts and systems, which are dirty, oily and greasy. Worker is exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains white repairing, positioning and moving equipment and components. Worker is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from solvents, fluids and lubricants.
