About The Role The primary purpose of the Cytotechnologist position is to provide the Supervisor Cytopathology, cytopathologists, and physicians with accurate and reliable evaluations of cytologic samples. Cytotechnologist assumes independent, meticulous microscope work and must be comfortable with a high degree of responsibility and work well under pressure. Communicates correct clinical relevant information according to the standardized terminology. Adheres to policies and procedures determined by the department as well as CLIA regulations and supervisory observation. Responsibilities Service provided is patient centered. Responds to complaints and concerns by resolving issues immediately whenever possible. Organizes work process to accommodate customer needs, including internal customers and co-workers. Works effectively with team to ensure customer service scores for work area meet/exceed targets. Demonstrates respect for patient rights. Performs accurate microscopic evaluation and interpretation on GYN and Non-GYN cytology specimens, marking the appropriate fields for preliminary evaluation. Provides preliminary assessment on abnormal Gynecologic and all Non-gynecologic specimens pending final diagnosis by a pathologist. All negative Gynecologic cases screened, typed, reviewed for accuracy and electronically signed out in a timely manner. Responsible for reporting and issues a report, which communicates the correct clinically relevant information according to the standardized terminology. Actively assists at FNA procedures on site by collecting clinical data, processing slides and communicating specimen adequacy to the radiologist/clinicians and pathologist. Accurately utilizes Anatomic Pathology lab information system in accordance with established laboratory policies. Performs cytopreparatory work including specimen receiving, accessioning, and processing: stains, mounts, coverslipping, and labeling slides. Files reports and slides in an orderly and retrievable fashion. Maintains the appropriate documentation of various performance standards as required by the State and Federal regulations. Responsible for answering phones, faxing and mailing reports as needed. Teaches and instructs students of the Cytotechnology program in screening and cytological preparatory techniques and assist pathology residents on cytology rotation. Actively participates in Continuing Education Programs: CAP comparison program, ASC Cyto-Econference, attends outside and in-house seminars, workshops and lectures. Demonstrates knowledge of Laboratory Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) programs and performs tasks within those guidelines. Complies with and maintain the appropriate documentation of various performance standards as required by the State, Federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations. Understands and adheres to University Hospital’s compliance standards as they appear in University Hospital's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences or related field and graduation from The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited cytotechnology training program. Eligible to sit for the exam within 6 months and become certified as a registered Cytotechnologist (CT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) within one (1) year of employment required. Successfully passes CLIA-mandated yearly Proficiency Test for Gynecologic Cytology. Capacity to sit, concentrate and perform microscopy for 80% of each day. Cytotechnologist must demonstrate strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
