Managing Director

DLA Piper

DLA Piper is a global law firm dedicated to delivering exceptional client service and developing our people. This role supports the Emerging Growth practice in Silicon Valley, providing strategic and operational leadership to manage client relationships and internal teams. Responsibilities Oversee pitch and proposal activity, matter opening, budgeting, and compliance with client guidelines. Monitor work‑in‑progress, billing, collections, and profitability metrics for the partner’s portfolio. Coordinate with billing teams to ensure timely and accurate invoicing aligned with client requirements. Track payments and allocations with collections, reporting key financial KPIs and identifying risks. Serve as primary liaison between the partner and internal business teams (finance, billing, admin, marketing). Lead a multi‑disciplinary team to deliver exceptional client service and operational excellence. Implement best practices for matter management, workflow optimization, and resource allocation. Ensure compliance with client outside counsel guidelines and reporting requirements. Support client‑facing admin needs, including status reports, budgets, and performance metrics. Partner with pricing and legal project management teams to develop and maintain alternative fee arrangements and matter plans. Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce administrative burden. Leverage firm technology platforms for matter tracking, reporting, and collaboration. Provide training and mentorship on best practices and tools. Participate in strategic planning, monitor execution, report progress, and adjust plans as market dynamics change. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (JD preferred). Minimum 10years of legal/law‑firm experience in practice management. Superior communication skills, ability to present complex information to senior leadership. Strong leadership, problem‑solving, planning, negotiating, and decision‑making skills. Innovative, creative, proactive, and able to work with a broad range of professionals. Strategic advisory capability, confidentiality, tact, and resourcefulness.
