Job Description Job Description Position: Senior Estimator Department: Operations Reports To: Chief Estimator Location: DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) Position Summary: Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join our team. The Senior Estimator will play a crucial role in the pre-construction phase, responsible for accurately estimating project costs and preparing competitive bids for a variety of underground utility projects. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and customers. Responsibilities: Bid Preparation: * Prepare comprehensive bid proposals based on accurate cost estimates, ensuring competitiveness while maintaining profitability. * Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing for materials, equipment, and subcontracted services. Assessment: * Identify and analyze potential risks and opportunities associated with each project. * Develop strategies to mitigate risks and enhance project success and profitability. Cost Estimation: * Utilize historical data, pricing databases, and industry knowledge to prepare detailed cost estimates for underground utility projects including water, sewer, storm drain, and other utilities. * Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to identify project requirements and scope of work. Relationship Management: * Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and customers to facilitate successful project execution and business development opportunities. * Identify new subcontractors and vendors to diversify the existing subcontractor and supplier network. * Negotiate favorable pricing and terms and conditions with subcontractors and suppliers. Collaboration and Communication: * Work closely with project manager, engineers and other team members to ensure alignment of estimates with project goals and specifications. * Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and customer presentations as necessary. Documentation and Reporting: * Maintain accurate and detailed records of estimates, including assumptions, methodologies, and calculations. * Prepare and present reports on estimating activities, project costs, and budget forecasts as required for the estimating handoff to production. Continuous Improvement: * Stay informed about industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in estimating and underground utility construction. * Implement improvements to estimating processes and tools to increase efficiency and accuracy. Qualifications: * Proven experience as an estimator in underground utility construction, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior estimating role. * Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and contracts. * Thorough understanding of diverse specifications from multiple jurisdictions. * Ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects of various sizes. Education: * Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred. Experience: * Proven experience as an estimator in underground utility construction, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior estimating role. Certifications Preferred: * OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction Safety Certification * Valid Driver's License (for site visits and pre-bid meetings) Skills & Competencies: * Strong proficiency with estimating software and tools (e.g., HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam). * Excellent analytical and mathematical skills with a keen attention to detail. * Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. * Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
