Job Description Under the general supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor, the Registered Histotechnician supports the flow of anatomic pathology specimens, which may include tissue embedding, microtomy, frozen section cryotomy, and staining. Job Specifics Benefits Eligible: Yes Shift Details: Days, Monday‑Friday with occasional weekends and holidays Essential Functions The Registered Histotechnician is a certified Histotechnician who organizes and manages the flow of anatomic pathology specimens through the laboratory, from specimen receipt through preparation of final diagnostic slides. Responsible for microtomy, cryotomy and embedding anatomic pathology specimens. Provides training and orientation to new team members and assists with advanced instrument and specimen troubleshooting. Supports the laboratory QA program by monitoring indicators such as quality control, temperatures, and instrument failures. Performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting and takes corrective action when standards are not met. May assist with surgical pathology gross examination, dependent on education verification and site‑specific competencies. Utilizes appropriate histology and cytology staining techniques, including routine, special, and immunohistochemical staining. Ensures slides are free of artifacts and controls exhibit appropriate staining characteristics. Operates automatic stainers according to written protocols, recognizes abnormal staining results, and troubleshoots to correct the results. Completes staining within established turn‑around times, maintains an inventory of stains, employs appropriate cover‑slipping, and maintains specimen identification integrity. Performs special projects as assigned, reviews progress with the section manager, assists in writing and reviewing new policy/procedure, provides education to others, assists in computer system design, upgrades, database maintenance if required, and participates in learning activities to expand knowledge of histology. Assists in maintaining the laboratory section to CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission standards and regulatory requirements. Performs competency testing as required by accrediting agencies and assistance in performing maintenance per protocol. Skills Chemistry Biology Biological Sciences Histology Anatomic Pathology Surgical Pathology Laboratory Instruments Reading Quality Control Minimum Qualifications (Registered Histotechnician) Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years, or 60 semester hours or equivalent, including a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry. Education verified by Quality Assurance Manager or Director. Histotechnician ASCP certification, or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications Two years histology experience. Minimum Qualifications (Unregistered Histotechnician) Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years, or 60 semester hours or equivalent, including a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry. Education verified by Quality Assurance Manager or Director. Preferred Qualifications (Unregistered) Previous pathology or histology experience. Physical Requirements Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and assess customer needs. Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate and hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use for typing and accessing information. For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles. Location St. Marys Regional Hospital, Grand Junction, Colorado. Scheduled Weekly Hours 40 hours Hourly Rate $26.47–$40.87 (actual rate depends on experience).
